Activist judges have put this country in the mess it's in today.

No. Judges look at the laws that politicians write.
Then make a judgement.
If one of the parties thinks that judgement is incorrect, then it gets past up to the next level of Judges.
Here several judges will look at the law and either agree with the first judge or overturn his ruling.
This can repeat until it gets to the Supreme Court where the final judgement is made*.

Due to the failure of the Republicans in the last sitting to vote on the last nominee, there are only 8 not 9 judges in SCOTUS at the moment, so any 4/4 decision means the previous Courts decision counts.

For there to be "Activist judges" then on balance these should be balanced out by the "Activist judges" appointed by previous Presidents.

Don't forget not all Presidents get it right, these are, in your words "Activist judges".
Look up, Roosevelt - Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr.,
or Eisenhower - Earl Warren,
or Truman - Justice Tom C. Clark.
