Personally I'm looking at some of the stuff on the lower end of the spectrum. For it's lower power consumption. These two, on paper, are pretty evenly matched. GPU SP Base(Boost) DP Base(Boost) TDP Cost Radeon RX 460 1953(2150) 122 <75 $109 (2GB) $139 (4GB) GeForce GTX 1050 Ti 1981(2138) 62 (67) 75 $139 (4GB) Which makes it a great time to be a shopper. I'll likely be getting a 460, or sometime similar depending on the new stuff launching this quarter or next, to replace the HD6870 in my HTPC. As it would give me the same GFLOPS for about half the TDP. Plus I need a specific Radeon driver display scaling function, that Intel and Nvidia don't have in their drivers, to have 1080 displayed correctly on my older 61" TV. Then I might grab a GTX 1050 Ti or two to play around with. Like I did with the 750 TI FTW I have now. Yeah fascinating times ahead as the changes kick in. The compute portion of Vulkan is starting to look quite viable now, which is a good thing. Will eventually take some of the edge off comparing apples with oranges at some point. "Living by the wisdom of computer science doesn't sound so bad after all. I have substituted a GTX 750 OC with a GTX 1050 Ti on my Windows 10 PC and it is much faster. But why does its fan run and make noise even when not crunching GPU tasks? The 750 fan was almost never heard even when crunching GPU tasks. Tullio |

The 750 fan was almost never heard even when crunching GPU tasks. Don't know, but by default my Gigabyte G1 gaming 1050ti variant turns the fan off completely ( 0rpm) for extended periods until some threshold, then runs at inaudible ~1000rpm under high loads for a bit. I have the reverse situation to yourself, whereby I would rather a steady low fan speed, so I set 'aggressive' fan curve in (evga) precisionxoc. Since that runs ~95% load at 39C, most likely you could set to a quiet profile comfortably, depending on the cooler yours has. [..and choice of software... still coming to grips with the increased configurability in this gen.] [Edit:] I've also yet to work out why I see mine boost above the rated boost clock (to ~1866MHz) periodically also, but only while playing youtube videos at the same time as crunching. I'm guessing there's some driver threadiness going on that throws a switch, but fingers crossed I might have lucked out in the silicon lottery finally... It is not the 1050 fan making noise,it is the main fan of my HP Pavilion 500-152ea Desktop. For some reason, the GTX 1050 is using more power than the GTX 750 OC it had before. Tullio |

I've downloaded Geforce 376.09 and BOINC recognized it. It seems to work on my GTX 1050 crunching Einstein@home GPU tasks. Tullio You don't put old wine (SW) in new bags (HW) but new wine in new bags and old wine in old bags (Gospel) |

Continuing the conversation we briefly moved to Riastmer's application support thread yesterday... I fired up the new Haswell / GTX 1050 Ti host under Windows 10 for the first time since installing the new card. So far, all I'm seeing is with no cuda or OpenCL support at all - although it's driving a 1080p full-HD monitor at full resolution. Neither NVidia's 375.70 nor 375.95 will install - they both claim the Win 10_64 drivers are incompatible with my Win 10_64 operating system. I'm currently waiting impatiently for the Windows 10, version 1607 update to |

Does this count as progress? (the version 1607 'Anniversary' update failed too. Going back to Windows 7 soon if this carries on) |

Going back to Windows 7 soon if this carries on If you are "determined" to brake this Windows 10 Try if stopping driver updates by this 2 programs work and can be reversed (I seem to remember some very old reports that once you disable updates by O&O ShutUp10 this can't be reversed) https://www.oo-software.com/en/shutup10 http://www.winprivacy.de/english-home/ And if DDU works to clean everything NVIDIA http://www.wagnardmobile.com/?q=node/125 http://www.guru3d.com/files-details/display-driver-uninstaller-download.html  - ALF - "Find out what you don't do well ..... then don't do it!" :)  |

Yes, it's a test machine and I've configured it for dual, independent boot: With legacy BIOS - boots off OEM Win 7 Pro SSD With UEFI BIOS - boots off first partition of mechanical HDD, hidden from Windows 7 Both OSs can see the second, data, partition of the HDD as drive D:, so can share the same BOINC installation for testing, and as practice for me in my role as 'Help Desk Expert' at BOINC. Third (or was it fourth?) failure to install 1607 eventually gave me an error number implying timeout, so I'm downloading the standalone updater to see if that works any better. |

It is worth checking that Windows has been fully updated as nVidia can refuse to install on a non-updated system |

Having installed the GTX 1050 on the Windows 10 PC, dated 2014, I would like to install the GTX 750 OC on my SUN workstation dated 2008 and still working. But I think its BIOS is legacy, not UEFI. Can I install the 750 on it? It is running SuSE Linux 42.1 and has now a HD 7770 GPU board. Tullio |

The 1050ti I run is on a legacy G33 chipset earlier than that, with only PCIe1.1, so 750 should feel right at home. "Living by the wisdom of computer science doesn't sound so bad after all. It is worth checking that Windows has been fully updated as nVidia can refuse to install on a non-updated system I couldn't get Windows to update either - same reason given, the anniversary update (either from Windows Update or the stand-alone installer) wasn't compatible with the OS I'd installed from the manufacturer's OEM recovery DVD. All the smaller incremental updates went through just fine. I set it back to Windows 7 mode overnight - I'll try again later, maybe contact the supplier. |

I couldn't get Windows to update either From W10Privacy Changelog: http://www.winprivacy.de/deutsch-start/versionshistorie/ 2.1.1.0 (20.03.2016) - The search for Windows updates is now also possible via Commandline: With the parameter "/ s checkupdates", W10Privacy can be started in unattended mode so that it searches for updates afterwards (if necessary, The search for updates necessary prerequisites are set by Gui). If updates are detected, the well-known window is displayed in which the updates to be installed can be selected. - The search for Windows updates via W10Privacy is now done faster, since updates are no longer checked on the Fake WSUS, but directly on "Windows Update". However, in networks that actually provide a WSUS server, this option is disadvantageous, so the search for updates can be activated with a "Fake WSUS". A "standard user" should not select this option, the search takes longer. ... This (maybe) means that W10Privacy have its own "search for Windows updates", I wonder if that will be any different than the "standard"... I managed to get the 1607 Anniversary update to install in the end, by restoring the hardware to the state it had been in when I did the original installation (removed GPU and wireless network card, then re-tried Windows Update detection). It took ages to install, but got there in the end. And following that, NVidia drivers installed properly too - I think I got a full version of 375.70 (including CUDA and OpenCL) from Microsoft, but then replaced it with 375.95 from NVidia. Been running stable since then while we worried about the website instead, but I must get back to testing the BOINC Manager incompatibility (can't restore from notification area). |
