Wisconsin Badgers have won.

The Golden Bears have won.

The Bruins have won.

The spoiled children have embarrassed themselves, maybe out of the rankings.

The Gators won, Bama won and Clemson won.

I think U of L plays Clemson sometime this season. They've been trying to beef up their football schedule for years, but really when it comes to sports, U of L is a basketball school.

Eric actually attended the Badger's game at Lambeau last weekend. He and his old college buddy were thrilled to see the Badgers win there. They went expecting to see a loss.

Eric and my brother are going to the Cal game next weekend. Go Bears!

Louisville beat Syracuse today. I think Florida State comes to U of L next weekend.

Eric enjoyed a Badgers win again today.

(We watch a whole lot of college football around here in the late summer/fall...)

Back when I was a kid in the 70's, U of L's football program was lucky to get a couple thousand in an old astroturf fairgrounds multi-purpose facility, but they've come a long way since then, with an on-campus stadium and a lot more fans. Their move to the ACC has helped, too.

Though we all love to watch it. College football is such a hypocrisy today.

it is also a modern version of slavery.

Why do you feel that way? Because of the college scholarships awarded to the student athletes?

Perhaps it is because the student athletes are unpaid and the television revenue that football brings in greatly benefits big schools?

With practice sessions, sessions with their trainers, home games, travel obligations for away games and their own studies, college athletes are very, very, very busy young people.

I think that all college athletes, from Archers to Water Polo-ists, (...that's not a word, is it...) should be paid for their time, just as if they had campus jobs shelving books in the library or filing things in a campus administrator's office.

I know that football is the only sport that really brings in the big bucks, but all campus athletes have jobs if they are good enough to get onto a team.

I consider a scholarship as very good payment.

Depends on the city and the school. At U of L, basketball has always been the driving force.

I used to think that too, until I began to consider all the hours these kids are obligated to put in. Some student athletes come from very impoverished backgrounds. If they are getting an academic scholarship, are they also getting living expenses? They burn tremendous numbers of calories being student athletes. Does a student from an impoverished background even have enough extra cash to adequately cover his or her caloric needs?

Sure, maybe the top athletes at big schools get full academic scholarships, dorm fees and an unlimited campus meal card, but not all athletes are top athletes and not all athletes go to big schools.

That's true, but if not on scholarship, a person who wants to play and is accepted on a team sport, does so by choice. The school isn't making the student do anything.

Whether awarded a full scholarship with full living expenses, an academic scholarship only, a partial academic scholarship or no scholarship at all, a student athlete spends a heck of a lot of time representing his or her school, and even more time on the practice field preparing to represent his or her school.

Truth be told Gordon, I'm not worried about the very tippy-top male football or basketball stars who have the red carpets rolled out for them. I'm also not all that worried about daddy's little darling, Ms. Bunny of the junior varsity women's golf team, whose parents are bankrolling her major in ballroom dancing, her room in the sorority house and the gown and shoe shopping bills submitted upon her selection as Daffodil Queen. I'm quite sure that Ms. Bunny will be adequately prepared, upon graduation, for an exciting but short-lived post-collegiate career in Human Resources, before marrying more money.

The kids I am truly worried about are the student athletes who fall somewhere in between the top football stars and Ms. Bunny. They comprise the majority of student athletes.

Much as I enjoy the tradition of college football, I can understand why it might be considered a form of modern slavery. At the very least it smacks of exploitation.

I feel that sports got these kids interested in a college, and if they get a full ride because they are talented athletes that's great, but even if they get on the team and are not awarded anything monetarily, they are at least there in the first place. If you pay students for sports participation, you have to start paying them for theatre arts and any other extracurricular activity.

If I may interject, most schools are not division I. Most student athletes get squat at division II. They still make the college a bit of cash. While those kids may not get exploited and have their image shoved into games the NCAA gets the $$$$$ from, which is flat wrong, they are exploited as young impressionable souls for "pride."

What really sucks though is Texas High School football. $63million stadium for high school football? Who is making that kind of cash off a child?

Back many years ago before all the TV $$$$ the games brought in a few $ in ticket sales and a bunch of alumni donations. That was okay as the donations helped reduce the cost to all who attended. Today the TV $$$$ go to big bonuses and outrageous salaries to athletic directors and coaches and do nothing to help the students at the school. If any of that money trickles out of the athletic department you can bet it is spent on big ticket "pride" items that don't do anything to teach the student body.

I think U of L is Division I in most of it's sports, but no matter how the college gets the entertainment money, it's the student's choice to try to join and play.

I think you talking of the free market system. It seems to be working only for basketball where most of the top players leave college after one year.

U of L vs. Clemson this weekend should be a good game. If U of L pulls this one out of it's hat, I will be amazed.
