A few shots taken last night, all are hand-held with a long lens, so not as sharp as they could be if I'd remembered to put a tripod in my bag...

First, just after sunset, moon through a thin veil of cloud

450mm equivalent, 1/200sec, hand held.

A few minutes later, as the sky got black and the contrast between the moon-bow and the sky improved

225mm equivalent, 1/400sec, hand held.

And finally the sky is really black now and virtually clear, slightly underexposed to show up the surface detail a bit better

450mm equivalent, 1/1000sec, hand held.

As I finally have reliable internet (ran some cat6 cable from the router to the spare bedroom), I shall post a few pictures.

Whilst I knew nothing about the "supermoon" I took this picture late on Sunday, I just liked the way it silhouetted the tress in my dads front garden




This one might be better in the "critter! thread, however for many years now my dad has had a seagull that turns up regularly in the morning to be fed.

If the food in not there it comes and stares in through the glass kitchen door.



Whilst on the subject of birds, I have seen fleeting glimpses of Pheasants in the garden but not managed to get a good shot of one till last week, when one came right up to help himself to the birdseed that spills from the feeders. I had to take the picture through the glass door as it ran off.



Since coming to stay with my father here on the Isle of Wight, I walk everyday along the seashore to the nearby town of Yarmouth.

On Monday while crossing the Yar swing bridge I just happened to catch the ferry between the mast of the yachts in the harbour.

Nice moon pictures.

On a blustery, chilly March evening in 2005, I took my tripod and Nikon FE-2 camera across the river to make a picture of a big clock that sits on top of a former prison and soap factory.
It's hard to hand hold any exposure less than 1/60 sec, so I used my tripod and a cable release, and bracketed 1 – 10 seconds with 200 asa speed 35 mm film at various f stops between 2 and 22. Since it was after sunset, you don't want to use a fast film(800 or greater) because it's too light sensitive and will burn out the whole scene. Fast films are really for action, not night-time photography. 100 and 200 asa are less light sensitive, and thus need longer exposures(slow film calls for a slower shutter speed).

I mainly like my newer digital SLR for the autofocus, and quick "processing" time.

And all their half dozen or more variations. Each had different contrast ranges and color pallets. Picking the right film for the subject and the mood you wished to convey.

Digital is all over saturated over contrast and usually over processed.
