Proxima Centauri is a flare star, with bursts of radiation that could be lethal to life on any planet there, especially complex life. A robust atmosphere might protect life from such flares, to a degree, but the flares could erode any atmosphere a planet might have, over time.

A substantial magnetic field could protect the atmosphere, but a planet in Proxima Centauri's habitable zone would be tidally locked. This makes a substantial magnetic field less likely, due to the planet's slow rotation.
