Message 1803948 - Posted: 21 Jul 2016, 18:47:14 UTC

I just got a replacement hard drive for my computer and installed seti@home. I have merged the old work units with the ones that I got in this installation, but I want to download that work to complete them (the old work has not expired). Can this be done?

You must copy the full "BOINC" folder in the "C:\ProgramDATA" directory over the new installation of BOINC.

Yes, it can be done, while resend lost tasks is off, a double reporting of a completed task, and asking for work on the 2nd/3rd/4th etc attempt will trigger the server to do resend lost tasks.

Do I have to wait the 5 minutes between update requests?

Do I have to wait the 5 minutes between update requests?

No, But the server will only resend 20 tasks at a time.

Actually, I've found that the minimal 5 minute interval is necessary. Otherwise, only the task reporting happens. The scheduler refuses to send any tasks if the last request was too recent.

I am doing something wrong: I hit the "Update" button numerous times and it says scheduler request completed, but the old tasks aren't coming.

It's not as simple as just hitting the "Update" button. As Claggy said, it first requires "a double reporting of a completed task". If you're not doing that each time, it won't fool the scheduler into sending the lost tasks.

There have been a couple threads on this topic earlier in the year. Specifically you could take a look at my post in Message 1798083, as well as a couple of links mentioned in that post.

OK, I think I can do that. Wish me luck; and I'll post my result here.

OK, I think I can do that. Wish me luck; and I'll post my result here.

It involves once you have a task ready to report, suspending network activity, and setting NNT, shutting down Boinc, saving a copy of the client_state.xml,
Starting Boinc, reporting the completed task, (*) shutting down Boinc, eithier restoring the saved client_state.xml (while incrementing the <rpc_seqno>number</rpc_seqno> by 2,
Or by restoring the <file> x2, <workunit> and <result> entries of the ready to report result into your existing client_state.xml,
Then starting Boinc, unsetting NNT, and network activity and asking for work
(* you can preselect the device that gets the lost wu's by selecting your project preferences to only ask for work for a particular device)

Here's an example of the entries that will need to be restored, (each in their respective (setiathome) portion of the client state.xml):

Well, I went through the process but instead of shutting down BOINC I hit the "red X" in the upper right corner, which closes most other software but not BOINC. (I knew that, but it slipped my mind) Anyway, it didn't work, so I'll let these units expire and be sent to someone else. Thanks everyone for your help.

I'm a faux Jedi Master who is frustrated with the chore of getting my replacement hard drive back to the state it was in before the original drive imploded (BOINC and the old WU's are low priority, but at least it's running). When my E-mail, security software, financial software, cloud storage, music program, etc. are up to speed, I may revisit this.

The hard drive was down for a month while the warrantee review and drive replacement (in Ohio no less) was done, so some of those WU's will be expired soon anyway.

Again, thanks for your help.
