It's getting close to state fair time again here in Louisville, Kentucky. I go almost every year just because I like the big carnival atmosphere and people watching. My routine is generally to get a corn dog, and then go to visit the rabbits(where I've gotten all three of my house bunnies), then there's the cows and other livestock, and then the art and photography, and culinary competitions. When I was younger, I liked the rides on the midway, but nowadays a good spin on the ferris wheel is enough for me.

What do you like to do at the fair? What's your favorite fair food?

Steak and cheese subs, with peppers and onions, with french fries.
Something cold to drink, and I'm good.

The lemon shakeups are pretty good here, along with the pineapple whip(not a drink, but more along the lines of soft-serve ice cream or frozen yogurt).

I have never been to the "State" Fair. CA is just too big for that. I have been to several County Fairs, LA, Ventura, Santa Barbara, and Orange. As for food, Ventura has a guy who makes killer Gummy Worms. Not your typical gummy. Santa Barbara it's the Funnel Cakes. Topped with fresh locally grown strawberries. LA serves Dodger Dogs. Orange, I don't know yet.

I thought every state had a central location for an annual fair that brought all the counties together for the top competitions.

My parents took me to the Stanislaus County fair a couple of times when I was a child. Stanislaus County is in the central valley and so that county fair has livestock and things you are less likely to find in counties that incorporate more urban areas. I'd never been to a livestock auction before my parents took me to that fair. It was interesting and educational.

I don't remember trying any foods. My dad was a dentist, and his children were kept on a pretty tight dietary leash when it came to sweets. (This probably accounts for my current love of baking...)

My favorite childhood memory of the Stanislaus County fair is of a fellow who would guess your age and your weight. If he got within a certain range, he kept the money you paid him. If he was off by a certain amount, you got your money back and some of his. If there was a dispute, he would ask for your driver's license to verify your age. He also had a huge public scale on display to verify weights.

I remember my dad teasing my mom that she should try this contest. My mother flatly refused and was not amused at all by the notion of stepping on a giant public scale to verify her weight!!!

I have never been to our local Alameda County fair. I think Carlos is correct. California is too populous and too geographically large for a state fair. If we have a state fair, I've never heard of it and I've lived in California all my life.

We have town fairs and country fairs here, in a range of sizes. The big ones (like the CNE in Toronto) are probably like your state fairs. My wife and I love the smaller rural fairs. Prizes for best pies and pickles, best handicrafts (my mother-in-law won several knitting awards at her local fair), livestock displays, usually a local car club or antique tractor club display, and lots of good food. Everything from the local ladies auxiliary doing fried chicken and home made corn dogs (not the mass produced crap some places have), to big travelling food trucks with slick new things every year. Deep fried butter, doughnut burgers, etc. They will have a midway with rides and games, but we give those a miss nowadays.

The California State Fair is held at CalExpo in our State Capitol, Sacramento. And it tells you how detached our state capitol is from the rest of the state that people don't know it exists! (Sorry for the politics)

My memories are of hot dusty, long lines, lots of walking, waiting ... so it has been a long time. Like Angela fair food would have been controlled. I think even in Los Angeles County fair they still have 4H stuff with farm animals.

I know about it, but my point is that it's called the state fair, but really is nothing more than the Sacramento County Fair. I think the LA County Fair, animals and all, is nearly 3 times the size. Oh and I have been to the livestock auctions. Several Rotary Clubs would get together and pool donations. The money would be used to make sure every child's project sold for a fair amount.

Our New York State fair is held in Syracuse. It's better to go during the week. On the weekends you have to be packed in with the other 90 to 100 thousand people.

We have the bakeing contests, the farm animlas and the whole shebang.
It seems like when I and the wife go, It's 95F. and full sun. We don't go much anymore.

Yes, it's usually pretty hot outside the ten days in August when we have ours, but most of it is inside where it's cool. I'm always fascinated by the families who come in from all the rural counties and literally camp out inside the exhibition halls with their animals.
