I was told that it happens when a "word" or string in one of the posts is wider than the page and there are no spaces or returns. Like the long string of "?????" that Mr. HR put in one of his posts. When his post is hidden, the rest of the thread is OK, but when the offending post is un-hidden, the whole thread acts the way you have described.

I think you're right. It was in the thread that includes one of HR's long question marks:

It'll also happen when someone posts a picture that's larger than your screen reolution is set to. Like the ones that Dogbytes is using to kill threads with.
