I didn't know...

The amount of what we "didn't know" (and still don't) is astonishing :(

Remember how I came in the Varoufakis thread (which wasn't called the Varoufakis thread back then) waving an EU flag? Aaah, those where the days! :D Carefree and naïve!

If Brits & Scots & NI actually had a clue what was really going on in Europe instead of listening to Beckham & Craig about how we should smile on our brother, everybody get together, try to love one another right now....

The real referendum vote would be 90% LEAVE.

Minimum.

Apparantly:)
Then you made the bed, sleep in it.

Too dang bad they didn't do a Senate and House. Senate where each country has equal representation and the House where each get representation based on population. It works in the USA to protect our wallet, and right now seems to be working a bit too well protecting us from anything being enacted.

This is maybe why I have problem to sleep.
And the scary thought to wake up with Jean Claude Juncker in bed... :)

Anyway. I thought that every EU country had the same power to vote as any other country like perhaps the US way.
Let's say Iceland would become a EU member.
About 300,000 citizens with a large fishing industry.
It's so large that even the UK sent warships back in the 80's to 'protect UK rights' to fish.
In the EU parliament they would be totally ignored!

I believe that is why the crazies 200+ years ago insisted on a bicameral legislature. Perhaps the EU should go tricameral with the third only having the power to repeal laws?

Another problem is of course that Germany and France always want to dictate us other EU members.

So you allow this?!!

What do you think?
Sweden has 20 MEPs, with 1.7% of the seats in the EU Parliament.
Do they have a realistic opportunity to influence the EU, and are the rest of the EU even listening to us or are we run over?

You signed up knowing this?!!

Apparantly:)
I didn't know that countries had seats according to the size of the population.
No wonder why EU has so much problem.
Germany, France, Great Britain (for now), Italy, Spain, Poland, Romania have more than 90% votes!
The rest, 22 countries, have about 10%.

And this is a problem with the large 'supernations'. The EU needs breaking up, as does the PRC, Russia, AND the USA... So that the resulting smaller nations can be more in tune, democratically, with the needs and desires of their citizens.

Take the USA, for instance...

The US House of Representatives has a total of 435 voting members. It, constitutionally, originates Federal Tax legislation. A simple majority would be 218...

Consider the following:

California has 53 Representatives,
Texas has 36,
New York has 27,
Florida has 27,
Illinois has 18,
Pennsylvania has 18,
Ohio has 16,
Georgia has 14,
and Michigan has 14.

That comes to 223 Representatives.

So, 9 of the 50 (or 18% of the) States in the USA hold 51.3% of the votes in the House.

Face it, States like South Dakota, North Dakota, Delaware, Montana, Wyoming, Vermont, and Alaska (1 vote in the House... each...) have essentially dick-all of a chance to have any meaningful voice in US House.

Think about it, with only 0.23% of the votes in the US House, is it any wonder that Vermont has a good chunk of its population that wants OUT of the USA?

But what about the larger States, you might ask me... Your own state of Texas has a sizable number of secessionists as well? That is the 'opposite problem'. The US Senate. The 'equal representation of the States' in the US Senate bites the larger states just as much as the 'proportional representation of the States' in the US House bites the smaller ones.

The USA is a BIG place. Heck, just the State of Texas is a BIG place...

Texarkana, Texas to El Paso, Texas is 1308 km.

Caribou, Maine to San Diego, California is 5313 km.

To compare, Oslo, Norway to Istanbul, Turkey is only 3246 km.

Heck, Lisbon, Portugal to Moscow, Russia is only 4614 km...

And,

London to Berlin is only 1101 km.

The point is that there are enough differences between various regions that the people in those regions have different needs, both in type and in quantity. The Federal system is fairly restricted to a one-size-fits-all approach. What might not be anywhere near enough in one region might be way too much in another.

Plus large bureaucracies have a good deal of 'inertia'. They are SLOW to change to meet changing circumstances. Smaller Governments can better meet their people's needs, wants, and desires.

The 'superstates' need to GO.

#Texit

Don't blame me, I voted for Johnson(L) in 2016.

Truth is dangerous... especially when it challenges those in power.

Exactly.
But in the US it seems to work fairly well so far.
Here in Europe...
The one-size-fits-all approach is impossible here.
If all countries at very least spoke the same language, having same traditions, culture and religions it might work.
The EU project failure is probably the reason why we see so many seperatist movements going on.

But isn't all that about the House meant to be balanced by the Senate where each State no matter what physical size or population has 2 Senators.

Yes. Mild symptoms of high levels of carbon dioxide in the blood include redness, muscle twitching, increased heart rate, shortness of breath and minor mental impairments such as confusion.

I see the EUsters are screaming "My way or the highway" again.

I wonder how many times they can pull that off before they ruin the EU.

And I'd say I'm surprised by the lack of self reflection from these guys, but since all of you know I personally think we are dealing with a handful of narcissists and psychopaths weeeeell... you won't be surprised to hear I think they are humanly incapable of any (self reflection).

Edit: I just had a thought. It's funny how the only time the OTHER countries appear to have a voice and allowed to speak is when Europe wants to gang up on someone!:D

EuroK9s?
Eurominions?
EuroStockholmSyndromeCountries?

Anybody want to coin a clever phrase?

Bojo has already used the term "Stockholm Syndrome" in the EU debate.

In the European Parliament, there are international political groups. Many colours, many shades, many views, many combinations, many compromises.
http://www.itsyourparliament.eu/groups/
Life, world and the EU are not as simplistic as "us vs. them", "Sweden vs. the rest of the world", "Tories vs. Labour", "donkey vs. elephant", "black and white".

We all know that. Nothing new.
The biggest problem with the EU is that they don't communicate with the EU states and their citizens.
Maybe they do but perhaps it get lost in translation.
However EU Commissioner Cecilia Malmström agree that the EU have problem to explain what the EU does and what goal it has to the European public.

Lawyers are saying that the Prime Minister cannot issue a notification under Article 50 without being given authority to do so by an act of Parliament.
And if the PM did then they would be overriding the 1972 European Communities Act, which provides for the UK's membership of the EU and for the EU treaties to have effect in domestic law.

In other words, changing the Legislation can only be done by legislation.

Can the law stop Brexit?
