Is there any way that I can keep an old computer id number on a new computer during the installation of SETI? I will appreciate any positive response/recommendation/tip... |

I've kept the same computer ID number on my daily driver since December 25th, 2004. So yes, I'd say it's absolutely possible to keep your old ID number. All you need to do is uninstall BOINC on your old machine, copy your BOINC data directory over to the new machine, then install BOINC and it will pick up your old data automatically and continue where you left off. [Edited to add] If you use the merge method as Kevvy states, the merge function always retires the original number and keeps the new number, so you would lose your original computer ID if you did it that way. |

You're right... would keep the old machine stats. but the ID number would change. That's what I get for posting before the coffee hits. :^) |

Thanks OzzFan, I've been doing as such since a long time in various machines and it always worked... Only recently (I would estimate around 3 months since my last activity as such) SETI started to give different ID although everything in Boinc data directory is exactly as it was in the previous computer. I am thinking this new version of SETI may be the culprit... |

I am thinking this new version of SETI may be the culprit... If that is the case, why not revert the boinc-version on the original computer to an older version, prepare the new one with the same version and merge( or the other method). Then you can update the new one to the latest boinc-version (or whatever you want) |

Thanks OzzFan, I'm using the latest version of BOINC and it still works for me. I don't think the BOINC version is at issue here. I'd suggest digging into folder permissions. The file with the computer ID is client_state.xml if I recall correctly. |

Give it the same computer name/hostname as the previous computer and ensure it's the same (or as close to) operating system, then after it's submitted a work unit and appears in Account->Computers on this account try "Merge computers by name" at the bottom-left. And hope for the best! . . I have done that and it carries over the old stats but keeps the new ID number. :( . |
