Message 1795772 - Posted: 12 Jun 2016, 20:41:07 UTC - in response to Message 1794968.

I'm very sad (and angry too) by reading this notice concerning Arecibo, even considering how much is the annual cost for military weapons and other stuff.
I hope Arecibo will continue its operativity.
If another petition will be proposed on this, I will happy of subscribe it.

Arecibo is what in Carso (Karst) highland is called a dolina. It cannot be dismantled. Also the China FAST is in a dolina.
Tullio

The landform it's in can't be dismantled (at least not without lots of explosives), however all of the structures & equipment can be removed. Arecibo the place will still be there, but not the observatory.

I'm sure we could blow the whole area well below sea level if needed. I mean have you seen our military spending?

I'd like to see the Arecibo Observatory stay funded & running, but on the other hand I hate already seeing 30% of my pay taken in taxes.

Lot's of things to reply to...

First I want to make it clear that Breakthrough's effect on SETI@home wasn't due to anything malicious. As far as personnel go, Breakthrough wants experienced people, and SETI@home is where the experienced people are. It would be silly for those people not to go where the funding is.

As far a funding goes, it's clear that SETI@home doesn't have a strong advocate with a direct line to Yuri Milner. I'm two or three levels away from the people who get to talk to Yuri about funding priorities, and the people in those intervening levels have their own ideas about what the funding priorities are. If they aren't excited about SETI@home, Yuri probably won't be either.

Regarding non-Arecibo data sources, we're certainly working on that. In addition to definite plans for Parkes, we are considering FAST, MeerKAT and eventually SKA. I'd also like to build a tap from SERENDIP VI at Arecibo so we can record the data from every receiver (and when SERENDIP VI instruments are installed at other telescopes data becomes available more easily). It would be nice to get 327 MHz data from Arecibo before it gets shut down.

Each new data source has a cost attached to it, which we estimate at about ~$200k annually per data source. Unfortunately radio telescopes aren't as simple as plug and go, each one has a different way of communicating observing parameters, each one has different ways of setting or calculating the observing frequencies.

Thank you for your reply, Eric. I've read the lines you have written and a little between them, too.

One thing I am personally interested to know is how it came to be that we have data from the GUPPI instrument.

PUPPI has been in operation a fair amount of time and I would *think* that if Einstein@Home is willing to share GUPPI and the ATLAS cluster, they might be willing to ship a bunch of PUPPI data, also. (I think the GUPPI data is probably the better data-set, and Parkes will be even better, but I'm just thinking if Arecibo is shut down we still might have a source of data as yet un-crunched from it.)

...I should have been born a multi-billionaire.... <sigh>

$200k / source is just a little beyond my budget.

Plus the money to keep the people (such as Eric) going, and their hardware.

I'm Embarrassed Every Time I See Arecibo on TV show or Movie.

It Looks Like CRAP. I Don't Care if It Works Magnificently. It is A Dirty, Crappy Looking Machine.

Quit Wasting Tax Dollars for It.

Unfilled Pot-Holes have more interest to me than A Rusted, Dirty, Crappy Dish.

Yap to Da Yap Power.

I've been to Arecibo. It is a beautiful place. There are wild orchids growing under that dish! Yes the facility was built decades ago and she is showing her age, but she still works.

Just for a bit of understanding, does anyone know
how important the Arecibo dish is to spotting big
rocks that may hit the earth?

Maybe the NASA Near Earth Objects program should know this. It is managed by JPL.

My understanding is that it was being used for that. At least at one point in time. However when being used to look for space rocks we don't get data for SETI@home.

I'm not sure how much it will help, but I wrote an editorial for the local paper on this. Good luck.

I have been with SETI@Home since virtually the beginning... I believe in this project.. when it comes to funding, this is a very small budget item and if we the people can waste money on ridiculous studies (of which there are many), perhaps a change in the political climate in DC is the ultimate solution here, we shall see.

To get a green star a 10$ once a year is all that is required although 10$ a month is 12 times better.

Re: Funding.

Notice how many posters have no 'Green Star'.

Is a small contribution of $10 US per month (easy to setup). From all participants. Too much to ask for?

As I have said many times you can turn off your green star. As I do for that very reason.

So it is not and should not be used as an indicator as to whether a person has donated.

Also we all donate money when we crunch.

How does one 'turn off' the Green Star?

There's an "Are all your donations anonymous?" setting in your account settings, bottom-left. You can turn off individual donations there. If you turn off enough of them that there's less than $10 in the last calendar year the star should disappear.

Even then a star does not say how much you donated, it could be $10 or 100 times that.

The rate of spin directly proportional to the magnitude of the donation?
