I joined SETI@home in 1999 but unfortunately I cannot participate anymore because of virtualBox requirement. Is there a standalone client or an Hyper-v version?

The computers I use all have Hyper-V and adding virtualBox is not an option.

Best regards,
mjda

Yes, SETI@Home does not use VirtualBox.

VirtualBox was never a requirement for SETI@home. The VirtualBox component included with BOINC (but not required) was only for some projects but SETI@home was never one of them.

To re-iterate: SETI@Home does NOT require VirtualBox to run.

The BOINC download page has two installers. One - more prominently - with VirtualBox included, and one without.

The one with VBox included sits at the front because the developers would want as many people to install VirtualBox, in case present projects decide to start developing for the virtual environment. Then the user base already has a correct VM installed.

Users can install the version with VirtualBox included, and then later uninstall VirtualBox. Then when a new BOINC is released and they want to upgrade the BOINC client, they can use the installer without VirtualBox.

The Add Project wizard in BOINC Manager and the Choose Projects list on the BOINC website show which projects support and use VirtualBox. You can recognize that from the VirtualBox image.

I was about to install it, from Oracle, when it flashed a warning that it was going to 'reset' my network and temporarily disconnect me.
what does it mean 'reset my network' ?
I have 152mb+ broadband via virgin media (uk) and I dont fancy anything being tweaked as it is set just how I need it, including a static IP for my wireless printer.

VirtualBox installs its ow set of network drivers which replace the existing ones. Once these are installed the network connection has to swapped over to allow the VirtualBox ones to work - this is called "resetting".

Currently, for SETI@Home there is no need to install VirtualBox, indeed it may be a disadvantage due to the small performance penalty incurred when running a single occurrence of the operating system, this performance penalty increases with each additional occurrence.

That is not true, Rob.
What VirtualBox will do is install a virtual network for its own use. This works on the side of the normal network, uses virtual hardware and is just 100Mbit fast. To be able to install the virtual hardware, the present network needs to be taken down, then after initialization of the virtual network it'll be restarted without any changes.

VirtualBox will not install drivers for the physical network card.
