Yes, I saw the retirement thing. After hearing that he died, for a minute I thought I had watched a remembrance of him.

BTW, there was a special about his life that aired last week right after 60 Minutes.

May he rest in peace.

I wonder if he knew he was sick (haven't seen the reports yet) and that's
why he retired. If he was hoping for some retirement time, then his death
really sucks, even more so.

In any case, I feel for his friends and family.

I was watching Fox News Channel early this afternoon when Chris Wallace was on a segment talking about his memories of Morley. Chris mentioned he had heard from people he knew that Morley Safer had been ill and in/out of the hospital for about a month now.

I have not had a chance to thoroughly search the www to confirm or deny Chris Wallace's comment. According to the Wikipedia article on Morley, it states he died of pneumonia at home.

Chris Wallace also mentioned that Morley Safer and his dad (the legendary Mike Wallace also of CBS & 60 Minutes) were "enemies of a sort" trying to one up the other on getting the scoop an a top story first.
