Message 1787796 - Posted: 16 May 2016, 3:34:12 UTC - in response to Message 1787794.

The A1C is a blood test that must be done in the lab. Your doctor probably ordered it. It measures Glycated hemoglobin which is a form of hemoglobin that is measured primarily to identify the three month average glucose (Sugar) concentration.

Wait a while and someone will make it available in home

I don't know how accurate and that is an expensive meter that you won't use very often being a three month average. You likely need other blood work at the same time so I'm not sure there is any savings.

IIRC you should only be diagnosed based on A1C result and not on blood glucose alone. Ask your Dr for a copy of your lab test results (every time).

I am lucky enough to be part of a network that records and I have access to, all of my testing results at any time.

I can access all of my test results from any participating medical practitioner at any time....all my tests are there for me to look at.

I do that myself by downloading my meter into my home computer once a month. My records go back farther than my med center.

My mother was put on Pioglitazone (AKA Actos) when diagnosed with Type II diabetes. She took it for years and it really seemed to work very well for her.

Yes I know, the lab e-mails me the results in a .pdf. Not just A1C but everything the Dr. orders. That may be the only part of Obamacare that actually works as expected.

Of course it is my responsibility to record my personal meter readings, those go into my computer and the Dr. gets a copy for their files.

The VA Hospital has my lab results online. I was also given a copy of the most
recent test results (tested Monday 5/09). I don't see the A1C anywhere. Maybe,
now that I'm diabetic, it'll be done in the future.

I'm soooooooo hungry. No good food in my house yet.

Also, I think the grocery stores sell frozen Aykins meals, don't they?

Ha. I spelled this wrong the first time, so I edited my post and

Yes, Walmart carries the Atkins frozen foods.

For "Induction", (Phase 1 of Atkins 20 Plan), stay away from the Atkins Pizza, and any of the Pasta dishes. ALL other frozen Entrees are good for Induction and forward.

Pizza and Pasta can be had during Phase 3 of Atkins. This is due to the higher carb count in these foods.

The portions are OK; but, a little on the small side. It is recommended that you add extra veggies to the frozen meals to get your nutritional needs met.

As always, fresh foods are better; but, we make due with what we can.

I'd be glad to assist you with your new goals on Atkins either here by PM or on the Atkins.com site in the Getting Started Forum. On Atkins, I have my own Thread called "Continuing to lose weight" which is an ongoing journal of my progress starting from seven + months ago.

People at the Atkins site are supportive and friendly. I think you would do well to create a Profile there, and participate in the Getting Started Forum.

God bless, and take care.

This morning I made my first post-diagnosis run to the grocery store. It wasn't
too difficult to find things I can eat. I did buy a few of the Atkins meals and
snacks. Stayed away from their pizza and pasta, as TimeLord suggested. I'm sure
it'll get easier but for now my dominant thought is: I'm going to need more
money. :-(

One thing to remember is that most fruit and veg are "free", if not "very good" for diabetics - just don't hit the sugar beet or sugar cane.....

Yes. Healthy food is expensive.
Buying special diet meals in a grocery store are even more expensive.
Best thing is to cook your own meals from raw ingredients.

Cauliflower gratin with smoked ham for instance.

Wonder if we should start a diabetic recipe thread?

Eating real food need not be more expensive.
One frugality tip I use is chicken soup.
I will cook one chicken (long 3-4 hour boil) with just basic veges, salt, and water. I will then take out the chicken and de-bone. I return only the chicken meat and put into 20 oz containers. The each day I will reheat one of the containers and change the soup.
Day 1: Tortilla soup: To the basic soup add some onion, garlic chili paste, tortilla chips, top with shredded cheese and avocado.
Day 2: Tom Ka Guy: Thai Coconut Milk Soup: To the basic soup add 1/2 can of coconut milk, Juice of half a lemon, mushrooms, Fish sauce, chopped garlic, Thai roasted Red Pepper sauce.
Day 3: Greek Avgolemeno Soup: Heat the soup to a boil, remove from heat add juice of 1/2 lemon, scramble an egg into the hot soup and mix to break the egg up.
Dav 4: Chicken Veggi Soup: Just add celery, onion, carrots, cabbage
Day 5: Repeat 1.
Yes this will cost some the first time you do it but the garlic chili paste will last a year, so will the Fish sauce, the chopped garlic and the Thai roasted pepper sauce. I have an extensive collection of spices but they don't get replaced very often.

Well. You have to eat more real food if you are diabetic then we other who can add starchy vegs and even perhaps sugar to our meals.
Sugar and starchy vegs are cheap.

Starchy foods can either be used for energy or become fat, I learned that a long time ago.

Portion control. Portion control. Portion control. Portion control. Portion control. Portion control. Portion control. Portion control. Portion control.

When you get to the class they should be enrolling you in you will learn it doesn't have to be expensive, but you can make it that way if you wish.

You can beat your diagnosis by having a low carb breakfast and then walking 4 miles and then in the gym for a 20-30 minute light workout on the weights. Your blood sugar will be right at 100 before lunch. I am assuming that you do not work full time.

Stay active after dinner and give up the dessert and booze.
Eat multi-grain bread and sweet potatoes instead of white potatoes. Brown rice instead of white rice. Eat fruit instead of juice and get most of your carbs from vegetables. For lunch and dinner have lean meat, beans and another green vegetable (or salad) and possibly a small sweet potato for the evening meal.

Drink 2% milk or diet soda or ice tea. Stock up on canned or f0rzen vegetables when they go on sale. A can of corn will populate three dinners.

get yourself some plastic containers. I buy and roast a turkey breast when they are on sale for 99 cents per pound. Also chicken thighs for a s little as 49 cents per Lb. I like canned or frozen corn, lima beans, navy beans etc etc , I make up 6 or eight small dinners and freeze them. I can make a vey nice meal for about $1.00 and I enjoy them as well.
