My nest of 6 x ~3 year old laptops all upgraded to max 2 - 8 GB RAM, crunches 20-50 WUs a day, but they all seem to be crunching with CPUs and not with GPUs. From brief research just now, using GPU processing would speed things up but what sort of machine does GPU processing please? Do any laptops have this or is one talking about a tower unit with the right cards installed? TIA George |

You will need either: - Intel GMA 4xxx gpu/integrated gpu - nVidia gpu/integrated gpu - ATI/AMD gpu/integrated gpu Example. I have Acer netbook, it has Intel GMA 3600 igpu, it is NOT Intel GMA 4xxx igpu, therefore my netbook does not qualify. What have you got? |

From the list of your machines it looks like they are all to old to have integrated graphics that support OpenCL. To use graphics built into the Intel CPUs they would need to be based on Ivy Bridge, from the Core i3/5/7-3xxx series, or newer. Core 2 CPUs would be to old to use the Intel graphics. Basically If you see GMA in the name for the graphics. Then it is to old. You would want to look for Intel HD Graphics. Then make sure it isn't a Sandy Bridge CPU, Core i3/5/7-2xxx series. Here is a list of Intel GPUs for reference. Some notebooks have discrete graphics from ATI/AMD or Nvidia. For those you would want to look for Radeon 5000 series or newer or Nvidia 8000 series or newer. Some Radeon HD 4000 GPUs can sometimes also work, but there is no guarantee. Spitfire.... Thanks for your feedback. My machines: 1) GenuineIntel Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-2350M CPU @ 2.30GHz [Family 6 Model 42 Stepping 7] (4 processors) [6650679] Acer Travelmate 4230 with 8 GB RAM. This is my current laptop which I use daily. 2) GenuineIntel Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 CPU M 560 @ 2.67GHz [Family 6 Model 37 Stepping 5] (4 processors) [7963808] Dell Latitude E 6410 with 8 GB RAM 3) GenuineIntel Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU P8700 @ 2.53GHz [Family 6 Model 23 Stepping 10] (2 processors) [7952960] Dell Latitude E6400 with 8 GB RAM 4) GenuineIntel Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T7500 @ 2.20GHz [Family 6 Model 15 Stepping 11] (2 processors) [7940328] Dell D830 with 3 GB RAM 5) GenuineIntel Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU T5500 @ 1.66GHz [Family 6 Model 15 Stepping 6] (2 processors) [7857207] Old Travelmate circa 2009 + another old Samsung NC10 |

Spitfire.... When I asked what have you got, I was looking for gpu info. Either look up the specs or install GPU-z on each of them and it will tell you what gpu you have on each machine. However, like it was said before, C2D with Intel gpu do not qualify so don't waste your time. If you got nVidia or ATI/AMD gpu in one of those laptops, then they may or may not qualify. |

Thanks again Spitfire Will check with the i3 & i5 machines but suspect neither has GPU and the others are too old as you said. |

Just downloaded SETIspirit on my sole i5 machine which shows "no usable GPU found!" their exclamation mark - not mine. |

George 254 if you really wish to use those laptops to crunch with a GPU you can try looking at something like this as it may be cheaper than replacing the laptops http://www.pcworld.com/article/2984716/laptop-computers/how-to-transform-your-laptop-into-a-gaming-powerhouse-with-an-external-graphics-card.html |

Thanks Darth. Will have a look. |

Darth looked at this and the power supply needed consumes 110 watts so will leave this for now. |

Spitfire.... Forget about Core(TM)2 procs...they don't have intelHD! write which intelHD xxxx you have in i3 or i5 proc?! non-profit org. Play4Life in Zagreb, Croatia, EU |

Forget about Core(TM)2 procs...they don't have intelHD! The i3-2350M has Intel HD Graphics 3000. As I mentioned earlier in this thread it is to old to support OpenCL. SETI@home classic workunits: 93,865 CPU time: 863,447 hours Join the [url=http://tinyurl.com/8y46zvu]BP6/VP6 User Group[ |
