Hy folks, comparing to the project "Milkyway" , the point are generated at the project SETI@Home , isn´t funny. To get 100 points i must only (at Milkyway) crunch 76 seconds on my HD 6950. On Seti@Home i must crunch 1200 seconds to get 100+ points, that isn´t funny, my electricity bill is growing and growing, and in three days SETI crunching i got to PAY 10.- € (Euros). Too much for me sorry, i can only crunch a few days. But , i am NOT leaving. ^^ |

Credits at different projects are very much like national currencies: I could make a higher number elsewhere, but as they are worth correspondingly less, it isn't worth moving there over. :^) When I was crunching for Einstein@Home, for example, I noticed that my daily production/RAC topped out at almost exactly 4x what it peaked at here with the same farm. SETI@Home, being run by the developers of BOINC, uses a credit system based the actual FLOP count of the work unit (you can see how many operations it took in your account -> valid tasks). Some projects pay a flat rate per work unit, and of course this is open to inflation. |

The kitties sure aren't leaving. It's not all about the credits, although I have amassed a few over my approaching 16 year run here. They are fun to monitor, and provide a valid comparison among users here on Seti. Given the rate of return here compared to other projects, you may get an idea of how much crunching I have done to get where I am. BUT.... As they say, it's all about the science. And with the brand new release of Green Bank data now being processed, this is an even more interesting time for one to be a Setizen. "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |

What the heck are the credits good for? As far as I know they only buy me access to these forums. I can't pay the rent or buy a meal with them. To me they are just another number attached to my profile. Since 1999 every computer I have owned has been crunching seti@home data 24/7. I doubt that I could buy a cup of coffee with the money I could save in a day by shutting down my computer for a few hours. I participate in this project because I think it is important to the future of mankind to find ET. I will continue to participate until I die or the project shuts down. Its the 0.01 extra on task 12136953 that makes all the difference... It is alleged that if one accrues sufficient credits a toaster will wing its way in one's direction, but as nobody has yet admitted to seeing said toaster we have no knowledge of how many credits are required. What the heck are the credits good for? As far as I know they only buy me access to these forums. I can't pay the rent or buy a meal with them. To me they are just another number attached to my profile. Precisely. Well, not entirely. I started off motivated by not only the science in its own right but also by the idea of becoming famous for crunching THE UNIT that proves ET exists. I joined Einstein because the science also interests me, plus with the smaller user base and the fact that they actually have found some of what they're looking for, I feel like I have a decent chance of finding something (okay, so the chances are still pretty small, probably to the point that I'm deluding myself, but they're better than Seti). On the other hand, crunching a unit that finds something at Einstein carries a lot less potential fame than finding ET. I periodically look at the other projects available, but none of them really interests me scientifically (other than Orbit, which seems to be dead for good). credits are just numbers. Yes but a new toaster would be quite the prize, the fame and fortune that would come from it would amaze all. |

But for many of us, we would have a lot of toasters, and I don't even eat toast! |

credits are just numbers. Who ever gets that first toaster, They could sell it on E-bay and make a fortune. I notice that now that I'm getting other data from whatever. The RAC is falling again. Such is SETI@Home. Nope Im staying. Been here almost from the start. I do crunch for two other projects when Seti goes down. But I will stay here until the end. Or until some other project starts giving toasters:) [/quote] Old James |

Its the 0.01 extra on task 12136953 that makes all the difference... If he who takes many extra long vacations hasn't gotten one, I don't think there are any to be had. |

LOL... Back in the days before Intel came out with the core2 architecture, I was running AMD Semprons and such. Which ran so hot they were referred to as 'toasters'. The kitties keep checking the mail for a toaster-sized package from Berkeley with the Seti logo on the label, but meowsigh... No toaster for me yet. "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." I agree. The points awarded for S@H are outrageous. Everybody should leave the project as a sign of their disgust. Then I might finally get a Greenbank WU... |
