HIV effort let down by test shortages, says WHO

A shortage of HIV testing could undermine global efforts to diagnose and treat people with the infection, warn experts from the World Health Organization.

They looked at responses to annual surveys that the WHO had sent to 127 countries between 2012 and 2014 asking about capacity and usage of blood tests that check HIV status and health.

They found worrying gaps in provision.

Zika in the news.

New Case of Local Zika Infection Reported in Florida

HealthDay ReporterTHURSDAY, Aug. 25, 2016 (HealthDay News) -- Yet another case of local Zika infection has been reported in Florida, this time in Palm Beach County.

This latest report brings the total number of local infections in the state to 43, state health officials said in a statement Wednesday.

And that total will probably climb far higher by summer's end, scientists predicted Wednesday.

Study.

Zika Seems to Thrive in the Vagina

It was just last month that the first case of a woman spreading Zika sexually to her male partner was documented, and around the same time that a study found the virus in a woman’s cervical mucus 11 days after infection. Before that, most of the talk about sexual transmission of the normally mosquito-borne virus focused on semen, where Zika can survive for a long time. (A recent report puts it at up to six months.)

Good news, he pulled thru. :)

This brain-eating amoeba kills 97 percent of the people it infects. Not Sebastian DeLeon.

When his headache became so excruciatingly painful he couldn’t stand to be touched, the parents of 16-year-old Sebastian DeLeon started researching hospitals.

Devastating bird flu strain found in US wild duck, USDA says

The type of avian flu that led to the deaths of about 50 million U.S. chickens and turkeys last year has been found in the country for the first time in 14 months, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said on Friday.

The USDA said it detected the H5N2 strain of the disease in a wild duck in Alaska as part of surveillance testing it has been conducting on birds since last year's devastating outbreak. That strain has not been found in any wild birds or poultry since June 2015, according to the agency.

Sorry Lyn but this subject is totally wrong in the states . If you didn't pay people for there blood you would not get desperate people donating bad blood in the first place .

If you did not pay people for there bloody you would be able to screen them and say sorry we can't use your blood and not have a stuation where people will get upset or even violent because they need the cash and they won't take there blood .

Once again when you try and make cash out of health you cause more problems and send the costs of health higher .

Mature country's like Australia do not pay people to give blood it is done voluntary and you will be screened before you can actually give blood . All you get after is a cuppa and a cookie NO CASH

Glenn, I think you might be confusing donation of whole blood (usually unpaid) with donation of plasma (frequently paid).

I was under the impression you pay donors to give blood and that's just wrong . I'm not against the blood being sold or being charged for the use of the blood or parts of it . Just the paying people for there donation of blood . What happens after it's been donated is fair enough .

I agree, its wrong, and it does not happen.

You are hearing about blood *plasma* donation centers that DO pay people... BUT...

The mainstream media loves to do “sign of the times” pieces during America’s recession. Time and time again we see the same report about the increase of people donating plasma for money as a means of making ends meet. The reports always indicate that both blood and money is given to those who need it most. A misconception that is never clarified is that this plasma does NOT go to hospitals. Plus, with everybody donating to be compensated, volunteer blood clinics that DO provide hospitals with blood are now struggling.

“People think that the plasma they donate goes to the hospitals to save lives and it’s just not the case,” said Lance Bandley, Community Relations Representative of ARUP Blood Services. “If you donate at a plasma center, it cannot be used on a person. It has to go to some other use such as research, medical products or household products like shampoo.”

Blood services like ARUP that provide blood to hospitals do not compensate their donors due to a law passed over 20 years ago. “The FDA changed it so that you could not compensate someone for blood that will be used for another person. The problem that they were having is that people would lie on their forms just to get the money,” said Bandley.

Officials: Zika spread through sex by man with no symptoms

NEW YORK (AP) -- U.S. health officials on Friday reported the first case of Zika spread through sex by a man with no symptoms of the disease.

In the other 21 U.S. cases of sexual transmission, the virus was spread by someone who at some point had symptoms.

Singapore confirms 41 cases of locally-transmitted Zika virus

Singapore has confirmed 41 cases of locally-transmitted Zika virus, mostly among foreign construction workers, and said it expected more cases to be identified.

All but seven of those infected have fully recovered, the health ministry and the National Environment Agency (NEA) said in a joint statement on Sunday. Those seven remain in hospital.

Researchers find first US bacteria with worrisome superbug genes

New Jersey researchers said on Monday they had identified perhaps the first strain of E. Coli bacteria in the United States with mobile genes that make it resistant to two types of antibiotics now considered last-line defenses against superbugs.
