Any Kind of Sex Can Spread Zika, CDC Says in Updated Guidance

Any kind of sex can spread the Zika virus, federal health officials said Monday in updated guidance for pregnant women.

And doctors need to ask all pregnant women about any chance they could have been infected with Zika, either through sex, travel or via mosquito bite, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in updated Zika guidelines.

Florida investigates four mysterious Zika infections

Health officials in Florida are investigating four cases of Zika that do not appear to be related to travel.

So far cases outside of Latin America and the Caribbean, where the virus is prevalent, have been spread by travel to that region or sexual transmission.

The four Florida cases have raised the possibility that mosquitoes in the US have begun to carry the virus.

Zika causes only a mild illness in most people but the virus has been linked to severe brain defects in newborns.

Governor: 4 new Zika cases likely came from Fla. mosquitoes

Four people infected with Zika in South Florida likely contracted the virus from local mosquitoes, marking the first time the disease has been transmitted by the insects in the continental U.S., Florida Gov. Rick Scott said Friday.

Ebola again began to take life in Liberia

Advanced age is one of the most deadly Ebola virus began to take new life in Liberia. In recent weeks, a child who was treated with Ebola diagnosis was killed.

Liberia’s Chief Medical Officer, Francis Kateh, revealed that genetic sequencing is currently underway to determine how 15-year-old Nathan Gbotoe became infected with the Ebola virus. The sequencing is expected to take weeks and requires…

Sex ban recommended for British tourists in Florida after Zika outbreak

Approximately 50,000 British holidaymakers currently in Florida should avoid unprotected sex for the rest of the summer holidays because of the risk from Zika virus, according to government advice.

An outbreak of four mosquito-transmitted cases yesterday prompted Public Health England (PHE) to advise pregnant women to consider postponing non-essential travel to the southern US state.

CDC issues historic travel warning over Miami Zika outbreak

(CNN)The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued an unprecedented travel warning Monday, advising pregnant women and their partners not to travel to a small community just north of downtown Miami, where Zika is actively circulating. This is the first time the CDC has warned people not to travel to an American neighborhood for fear of catching an infectious disease, according to agency spokesman Tom Skinner.

Anthrax outbreak in Russia kills child, sends dozens to hospital

MOSCOW — A child has died of anthrax in Siberia in the first fatal outbreak of the bacterial disease reported in Russia in 75 years, the regional governor’s office said on Tuesday.

A 12-year-old nomad died of anthrax and 20 more people have been diagnosed with it following the outbreak in a remote area, according to the office of Yamalo-Nenets governor Dmitry Kobylkin. Hundreds of nomadic reindeer herders have been evacuated to the regional capital, Salekhard, for treatment, and 90 of them have been hospitalized.

Anthrax outbreak in Russia kills child, sends dozens to hospital

Authorities said the outbreak is linked to climate change. For the past month, the region has been experiencing abnormally high temperatures that have reached 95F, 35C.

The main theory as to the cause of the outbreak is that a zombie infection, inactive for 75 years or more in the buried corpse of a human or a reindeer, 'awoke' in the recent Arctic heat wave.

UPDATE: Last two Ebola patients left hospital in Liberia – Peoria Technology Time

Liberia’s last two Ebola patients recover, leave hospital

Liberia had been the only country in West Africa with known cases. Neighbor Sierra Leone was declared Ebola-free in November while Guinea’s last known case recovered two weeks ago.

“There are no cases in the ETUs (Ebola Treatment Units) in the entire Republic of Liberia,” said Tolbert Nyenswah, head of Liberia’s Ebola response, adding that Ebola safety procedures remained in place.

National Institutes of Health launches first clinical trial of Zika vaccine

As health officials work to contain the country's first Zika outbreak, centered in a Miami neighborhood, scientists at the National Institutes of Health announced the launch Wednesday of a clinical trial of an experimental Zika vaccine.

It's the second such study to begin this summer: Inovio Pharmaceuticals provided the first dose of its Zika vaccine July 26.

Well it's more to think about if you are in Rio...
A report commisioned by the Associated Press has revealed that water in Rio's Olympic and Paralympic venues holds viral levels 1.7 million times what would be considered alarming in the United States and Europe.

Zika outbreak: 'Small number' of cases found in Scotland

A number of people in Scotland have been diagnosed as having the Zika virus, it has been confirmed.

The Scottish government said the disease, which has sparked a major health alert in South America, did "not pose a public health risk" in Scotland.

A spokesman said the mosquito that spreads the virus was not found in the UK and Scotland's climate meant it could not become established.

$48,000 drug rushed to treat brain-eating amoeba patient

A pharmaceutical company has rushed a special drug that once saved the life of a girl who contracted a usually deadly brain-eating amoeba to a South Carolina hospital with its own patient fighting the disease.

A courier drove the drug, called miltefosine, six hours from the company's Orlando, Florida, headquarters to Charleston as soon as the hospital called around 10 p.m. Tuesday, Profounda CEO Todd MacLaughlan told The Associated Press.

Zika vaccines show early promise

Three different ways of designing a vaccine have been shown to be completely protective against the Zika virus.

Scientists found all three offered protection in tests on rhesus monkeys.

Zika has been deemed a public health emergency, because it can cause serious birth defects.

Teams around the world are working to design a vaccine that can be given to people, but it is likely to be years before any is ready for widespread use.

More than 60 countries and territories now have continuing transmission of Zika, which is carried by mosquitoes.

Mutant ‘super lice’ US outbreak here just in time for back-to-school

Mutant super lice that are resistant to treatment have now spread across nearly the entire US. Some 14,000 of the tenacious lice were tested, and in many areas, 100 percent of them managed to survive a drug intended to exterminate them.

Scientists tested lice collected from 479 human subjects at 138 locations across 48 states. Only Michigan had no “super” mutations, meaning that there they can be treated by most over-the-counter medicines. Alaska and West Virginia were not part of the study.
