Utahn infected with Zika dies; first death in continental U.S. from virus

A Salt Lake County resident who tested positive for Zika virus died last month, becoming the first confirmed death related to the virus in the continental U.S.

The county Health Department announced the death Friday, saying the exact cause has not been determined. The individual, who had an "underlying health condition" and was elderly, traveled somewhere this year where mosquitoes are known to spread Zika, according to a news release.

Valley Hi Nursing Home in Woodstock dealing with scabies outbreak

WOODSTOCK – Residents and staff at Valley Hi Nursing Home are taking oral and topical medication in the wake of an unknown number of cases of highly contagious Norwegian scabies.

The McHenry County Department of Health was notified by the county-run nursing home June 30 of potential cases of the disease, health department spokeswoman Keri Zaleski said. The disease was confirmed the next day.

Visits have been restricted for symptomatic patients, who are being isolated, and the 128-bed nursing home has not been allowed to admit any more residents until further notice, Zaleski said. The nursing home has put signs at the entrance and informed family members.

Why Congress’ Zika impasse could awaken Ebola menace

While Congress dithers over the advancing Zika virus, another smoldering epidemic keeps threatening to burst back into flame.

Ebola.

Emergency funds to fight that deadly virus may run out in October because they were poached to fight Zika until Congress agreed on a plan to battle the new, mosquito-borne epidemic.

Superbug gene detected in a second person in the U.S.

Researchers have found bacteria resistant to the antibiotic of last resort in a sample from a second patient in the United States, according to a study published Monday. The patient had surgery at a New York hospital last year, researchers said.

The news comes after researchers reported in late May that a patient in Pennsylvania carried a strain of E. coli bacteria that was resistant to the antibiotic colistin, the antibiotic that doctors use to treat patients who have infections that don't respond to other drugs.

Man tests positive for Ebola in Delhi

A man from Delhi has reportedly tested positive for Ebola virus. The details of whether the man had travelled to any Ebola affected country or not are still unknown.

Ebola is a viral hemorrhagic fever transmitted by the Ebola viruses. The virus spreads by direct contact with body fluids of an infected person or an animal. It has killed over 11,000 people globally since its outbreak in December 2013 and affected over 28,000 people.

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/07/16/nyregion/zika-virus-female-to-male-sexual-transmission.html

The first case of female-to-male sexual transmission of the Zika virus has been documented in New York City, raising the prospect that the disease could spread more widely beyond the countries where it is already endemic and largely transmitted by mosquitoes.

For months, there has been growing concern about the dangers of sexual transmission, but until now the virus has been thought to pass only from men to women or between two men.

“This represents the first reported occurrence of female-to-male sexual transmission of Zika virus,” said a report issued on Friday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

Yep... another STD.

Mystery?

Elderly Zika patient in Utah may have infected a family contact

A Utah resident who died after contracting Zika from travel abroad may have spread the virus to a family contact who did not leave the country, raising troubling questions about a possible new route of transmission of the mosquito-borne virus, state and federal officials said Monday.

Florida May Have Its First Zika Virus Outbreak

Florida health officials said Tuesday they were investigating a possible case of Zika that wasn't carried back by a traveler.

If it's confirmed, it would be the first evidence that Zika has spread to mosquitoes in the continental U.S. All cases up to now have been in people who traveled to Zika-affected regions or their sexual partners.

Hot dogs, corn dogs recalled over possible listeria

More than 372,000 pounds of hot dogs and corn dogs made earlier this month are being recalled over concerns of listeria contamination.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture says Bar-S Foods, based in Alstus, Oklahoma, is recalling five chicken and pork products that could potentially be contaminated with listeria. The USDA says Bar-S hasn't received test results, but is recalling the items due to recurring listeria issues at the company.

First Baby Born With Zika-Related Condition Is Reported in New York City

Health officials on Friday reported the first baby born in New York City with the Zika-related birth defect known as microcephaly, a condition marked by an abnormally small head and impaired brain development.

“While not surprising, given the travel trends of our global city, this case is a strong reminder of the tragic consequences of the Zika virus,” Dr. Mary T. Bassett, New York City’s health commissioner, said in a statement. “We are monitoring the baby’s health closely and connecting the family with the necessary services to take care of their child.

Hepatitis C virus infection is the lead killer in US, CDC

Hepatitis C infection is the most common blood-borne infection in the United States, affecting approximately three million people according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
We have known for a long time that hepatitis C virus infection is a major cause of death in the United States; in fact, we now have evidence from the CDC that, among infectious diseases, it is the lead killer.

Why Kenya must be on the alert for an Ebola outbreak

Marsabit County could be at risk from the Ebola virus transmitted to humans from animals because the county is “environmentally suitable for Ebola transmission by bats”, scientists say.

The region which is located in the north of Kenya, has the appropriate “nature, dense vegetation and forested area for the Ebola virus,” Dr David Pigott, a researcher at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington, Seattle, told Nation Newsplex.

Any Kind of Sex Can Spread Zika, CDC Says in Updated Guidance

Any kind of sex can spread the Zika virus, federal health officials said Monday in updated guidance for pregnant women.

And doctors need to ask all pregnant women about any chance they could have been infected with Zika, either through sex, travel or via mosquito bite, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in updated Zika guidelines.

New antibiotic, found in the nose, could treat deadly infections

It's not often that something really useful comes out of your nose.

Yet German scientists credit bacteria in the humble human schnoz with producing an antibiotic that appears powerful enough to kill dangerous skin infections.

The antibiotic is produced by a type of staph bacteria found in about 10% of people's noses, according to a study published online Thursday in Nature.
