hehehee that's only a small one try 2-3 times that size . And there not mega bats that's there normal size here No Ebola but yes they can spread a very contagious disease . It has killed some people when a outbreak occurred on a farm . It infected horses then the farmer and workers became infected from the horses and they had to quarantine the farm and kill the horses. It was spread to the horses from the droppings of the bats and humans become infected when directly handling the horses the disease is called Hendra some facts on Hendra and the last outbreak in Australia http://www.who.int/csr/disease/hendra/en/ Edit: Hendra is why the Fruit Bats in Batemans Bay has made headlines here as locals have feared the spread of Hendra however I believe it can only be spread to humans Via infected horses |

How bad is Zika in Rio? Rio de Janeiro (CNN)So it's final: the World Health Organization has confirmed that the 2016 Olympics do not need to be postponed or moved from Rio because there is a "very low risk" that the Games will further spread the Zika virus. This is great news for athletes and potential visitors to the first South American Olympic Games, although the reality for residents is more nuanced, given the huge spike in Zika infections at the beginning of the year. http://www.cnn.com/2016/06/15/health/who-olympics-should-not-be-postponed/ Good news. |

Not shore if people know but what the Australian has done is use a type of medicine called fasge I think it's called but I think I spelt it wrong . The Russians have been experimenting with this type of medicine for decades . How it works is you find a bacteria that is not harmful to humans or a virus and inject it into the patient and it attacks the virus without having to use antibiotics . It's probably the way medicine will go in the future seeing as antibiotics are not working that much anymore . Nature fights it's self |

Not shore if people know but what the Australian has done is use a type of medicine called fasge I think it's called but I think I spelt it wrong . That would be phage therapy. FASGE is Fellow of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. Will phage therapy work? Well, there may be some cases where it might. But, just like with antibiotics, the pathogens will eventually evolve an immunity to it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phage_therapy Also note that some early stage research on getting this type of therapy approved in the USA and Western Europe has been going on in London and in the USA (in Lubbock, Texas), and likely a number of other places. Another topic of note is that it almost requires a good amount of genetic engineering. |

Yep thanks Well, phage therapy doesn't stop viruses (viri??)... Only *some* bacteria. As far as the Russians go... My problem is not with the Russian people, but with their government. But then, I have issues with the US Federal Government (and dang near every other 'national government' on the planet) as well. I have counted a number of Russian scientists among my friends, though most of them have been in the physical sciences (physics, etc.) and not the life sciences (biology, medicine, etc.). |

CDC says: Zika Virus Tied to Birth Defects in 6 Babies, Fetuses in U.S. The Zika virus has been tied to birth defects in the babies and fetuses of six women in the U.S. who were infected during their pregnancies, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported on Thursday. Three of the women have given birth to infants with birth defects linked to Zika, such as microcephaly and brain damage, the CDC said, citing data reported to its U.S. Zika pregnancy registry as of June 9. http://www.wsj.com/articles/six-babies-and-fetuses-in-u-s-had-birth-defects-tied-to-zika-1466101655 |

Plague warning: Plague warning in Fremont County FREMONT COUNTY - The Department of Public Health and Environment in Fremont County is issuing a warning to all residents in the county about the plague. The office has received several calls from residents reporting the disappearance of prairie dogs in various locations across the county. According to the office, unless the colonies are intentionally poisoned, the only other likely explanation is the plague. http://www.koaa.com/story/32224828/plague-warning-in-fremont-county |

Zika Virus Could Infect 'Thousands' of Pregnant Women in Puerto Rico, CDC Chief Warns Federal health officials said they remain concerned about a growing number of Zika virus infections in Puerto Rico and fear that "thousands" of pregnant women could be infected with the virus that has been shown to cause birth defects in infants. Tom Frieden, director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said today that health officials are still grappling with the Zika virus in Puerto Rico. http://abcnews.go.com/Health/zika-virus-infect-thousands-pregnant-women-puerto-rico/story?id=39931442 |

Yellow fever vaccine: UN backs lower doses amid shortage UN health experts have recommended cutting the standard dose of yellow fever vaccine by 80% in emergencies, amid a global vaccine shortage. A smaller dose would provide immunity for at least 12 months, they said. Emergency stocks have been depleted by a mass immunisation programme in Angola, where the disease has killed more than 300 people since December. A surge of cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo has raised fears of a crisis situation. The current outbreak of the disease has seen 18 million vaccine doses distributed in Angola, DR Congo and Uganda. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-36563308 |

Rio Arriba County has nation’s first human plague case The state Department of Health has confirmed that a 16-year-old boy in Rio Arriba County is recovering from the nation’s first plague case this year, and health officials will be going door to door in his neighborhood to inform residents about the illness and educate them on how to reduce their own risks. “We will conduct an environmental investigation at the teen’s home to look for ongoing risk and to ensure the health of the immediate family and neighbors,†state Health Secretary-designate Lynn Gallagher said in a statement Friday on the boy’s illness. http://www.santafenewmexican.com/news/health_and_science/rio-arriba-county-has-nation-s-first-human-plague-case/article_07a032e5-96f7-5942-a9ca-50dfeb11834b.html |

CDC Covered Up “Catastrophic Failuresâ€: At Level-4 Biosafety Labs Containing Ebola and Smallpox How safe are the government’s BSL-4 labs containing some of the world’s most deadly pathogens? Turns out, not anywhere near as safe as you’d hope. In fact, there is more reason than ever to think that things could play out like the plot of an unsettling pandemic movie – where, say, a virus escapes from a government lab and spreads rapidly throughout the population. And unfortunately for all of us, the dense cities and sprawling suburbs of modern development are all-too-vulnerable to the rapid, viral spread of a contagion, as numerous flawed laboratories seem ready to fail and unleash something unspeakable. http://freedomoutpost.com/cdc-covered-up-catastrophic-failures-at-level-4-biosafety-labs-containing-ebola-and-smallpox/ pfft. |

In addition, recent rabbit die-offs due to tularemia have been confirmed in the Santa Fe and Eldorado areas of Santa Fe County. Confirmatory testing was conducted at the department’s scientific laboratory division. Plague-positive pets have come from the following counties, according to officials — Taos, Rio Arriba, Santa Fe, Sandoval, Los Alamos and Torrance. Environmental investigations were conducted at each site to look for ongoing risk to others in the surrounding area, according to a statement. Dogs and cats have also tested positive for tularemia in Bernalillo, Santa Fe, Sandoval and Los Alamos counties. http://www.taosnews.com/news/article_564eb300-34ae-11e6-b34c-57f481f60808.html |
