Lucky Europe.

Zika virus may reach Europe this summer

The Zika virus could spread to Europe this summer, although the likelihood of an outbreak is low to moderate, the World Health Organization has said.

Areas most at risk are those where Aedes mosquitoes may spread the virus, like the Black Sea coast of Russia and Georgia and the island of Madeira.

Study on Superbugs.

Global antibiotics 'revolution' needed

A global revolution in the use of antimicrobials is needed, according to a government backed report.

Lord Jim O'Neill, who led the Review on Antimicrobial Resistance, said a campaign was needed to stop people treating antibiotics like sweets.

It is the first recommendation in the global plan for preventing medicine "being cast back into the dark ages".

The report has received a mixed response with some concerned that it does not go far enough.

Superbugs, resistant to antimicrobials, are estimated to account for 700,000 deaths each year.

Yellow fever threat is 'serious' but not an 'emergency,' WH

Yellow Fever in Africa Not Quite an Emergency, WHO Says

An outbreak of yellow fever that's killed 300 people in central Africa is worrying and needs some urgent action — but doesn't amount to a public health emergency at this point, the World Health Organization said Thursday.

Most cases are in Angola, where 2,257 suspected cases are reported. But the virus has been carried by migrant workers to the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda and Kenya and 11 travelers have carried it to China.

Frozen Food Fears: 4 Things To Know About The Listeria Recall

Frozen vegetables are a staple in many diets, so a huge recall of them has us peering at the packages in our freezers.

On Tuesday evening, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced an outbreak of the deadly Listeria monocytogenes bacteria — and frozen vegetables and fruits are believed to be the cause.

More than 350 products like green beans, broccoli, peas and blueberries sold under 42 brands at grocers including Safeway, Costco and Trader Joe's in the U.S. and Canada have now been recalled.

The story does not say if the Company's involved have used raw materials from other country's . We have had problems with food posining in frozen food .

The fruit or veg was not grown here in Australia but imported and only packed here so I wonder if the same thing has happened . In our cases the food came from Asian Country's .

Maybe this will help. http://www.fda.gov/Safety/Recalls/ucm498841.htm

The story that just won't go away....

The recall just keeps getting bigger and bigger.

DES MOINES, Iowa — Amid a massive frozen foods recall involving millions of packages of fruits and vegetables that were shipped to all 50 U.S. states, Canada and Mexico, authorities who want to stem the listeria-linked illnesses and deaths worry it'll be difficult to get consumers to dig through their freezers and check for products they may have bought as far back as 2014.

Zika virus strain 'imported from the Americas' to Africa

The Zika virus strain responsible for the outbreaks in Brazil has been detected in Africa for the first time, the World Health Organization says.

The WHO said it was concerned that the latest strain was spreading and was "on the doorstep of Africa".

It is currently circulating in Cape Verde, an archipelago off the north west coast of Africa.

CDC says 157 pregnant women in US test positive for Zika

The number of pregnant women in the United States infected with Zika virus is suddenly tripling, due to a change in how the government is reporting cases.

Previously, officials had reported how many pregnant women had both Zika symptoms and positive blood tests. In a change announced Friday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's count will include all women who tested positive, regardless of symptoms.

Zika outbreak fuelled by mosquito control failure, says WHO boss

The spread of Zika is the price being paid for a massive policy failure on mosquito control, says World Health Organization leader Margaret Chan.

Speaking at the agency's annual World Health Assembly, Dr Chan said experts had "dropped the ball" in the 1970s with regards to getting a handle on disease-carrying insects.

More than 60 countries and territories now have continuing Zika transmission.

Concern Zika causes baby eye problems

Scientists studying the Zika outbreak in Brazil are becoming increasingly concerned the virus may cause eye damage in babies.

Stanford University researchers found abnormal bleeding and lesions in the eyes of three infant boys whose mothers had caught Zika while pregnant.

I hope this is an isolated case.

The superbug that doctors have been dreading just reached the U.S.

For the first time, researchers have found a person in the United States carrying bacteria resistant to antibiotics of last resort, an alarming development that the top U.S. public health official says could mean "the end of the road" for antibiotics.

The antibiotic-resistant strain was found last month in the urine of a 49-year-old Pennsylvania woman.

Scots Ebola nurse Pauline Cafferkey 'may never run again'

The Scottish nurse who survived Ebola has said she has been left with permanent weakness in her leg and will probably never run again.

Pauline Cafferkey, 40, from Cambuslang, South Lanarkshire, was hospitalised three times after contracting the virus while working in Sierra Leone in 2014.

She told BBC Radio Scotland that she was now "Ebola negative" and her health had come on "leaps and bounds".

I wish her the best.

Zika precautions: What you need to know before you start your summer travels

Ahh, Memorial Day! For generations of Americans the holiday has marked the beginning of the season of sunscreen, barbecues and chlorine. It’s when you start putting sticky notes all over the guidebooks for that exotic trip abroad. And when you start tuning out at work and daydreaming about lying on a hammock with a thick paperback and a smoothie in hand. But this year, the long weekend also signals something a little more ominous. This is when you should start getting serious, if you haven’t already, about Zika.

Rio Olympics 'Should Be Postponed' Over Zika

This summer's Rio Olympics should be moved or postponed over the Zika crisis, 150 scientists have said.

Just 10 weeks before the Games begin, the group has written an open letter to the World Health Organisation (WHO) saying new findings about the virus make staging the multi-sport event in the city "unethical".

Zika crisis: WHO rejects 'move Rio Olympics' call

The World Health Organization (WHO) has rejected a call to move or postpone this summer's Rio Olympic Games over the Zika outbreak.

It said this would "not significantly alter" the spread of the virus, which is linked to serious birth defects.

W. Africa Better Prepared to Contain Future Ebola Outbreaks

GENEVA, SWITZERLAND—

The World Health Organization’s Regional Director for Africa says West Africa is better prepared to tackle future outbreaks of Ebola. In an exclusive interview with VOA, Matshidiso Moeti says Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea are now able to respond more quickly to emergencies because of upgrades to their surveillance, laboratory and health care systems.
