Frozen Food Fears: 4 Things To Know About The Listeria Recall

Frozen vegetables are a staple in many diets, so a huge recall of them has us peering at the packages in our freezers.

On Tuesday evening, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced an outbreak of the deadly Listeria monocytogenes bacteria — and frozen vegetables and fruits are believed to be the cause.

More than 350 products like green beans, broccoli, peas and blueberries sold under 42 brands at grocers including Safeway, Costco and Trader Joe's in the U.S. and Canada have now been recalled.

The story does not say if the Company's involved have used raw materials from other country's . We have had problems with food posining in frozen food .

The fruit or veg was not grown here in Australia but imported and only packed here so I wonder if the same thing has happened . In our cases the food came from Asian Country's .

Even in the place where Zika virus was first discovered, its true origin is a mystery

Zika Forest, Uganda

The forest where Zika virus was first identified in 1947 is located near a swamp, 25 km (15 miles) away from the Ugandan capital, Kampala. A sign at the entrance reads: “Ziika [sic] Forest, Property of Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI).”

“See that platform there?” Julius Lutwama, the head of UVRI’s arbovirology department, asked. He was giving me a tour of the 25-hectare (62-acre) tropical forest and pointing at wooden platforms high up in the trees. “In 1947, when researchers were looking for yellow fever, they would put monkeys in cages on one of these platforms. Periodically, they would collect blood samples from them and analyze them. That’s when they isolated a new virus on a captive rhesus monkey, which was not yellow fever.”

This new virus was named Zika, after the forest.

7th case of measles reported in Memphis area

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Health officials say the number of measles cases in Shelby County has risen to seven.

The Shelby County Health Department has been working to stem an outbreak of measles since the first two cases of the illness were reported in late April. The health department confirmed the seventh case on Friday. None of the patients are being identified.

If that's what your country wants choice that's your prerogative. It would be interesting to see how much that would cost the consumer. History has shown what ever is cheaper in the short run always wins.

You silly boy Australia does not need to import food we grow plenty of it . Now if you lot believed in free trade and stopped subsidising the farming sector you would not be able to compete with Australian farmers witch are world best practice and worlds most efficient farms .

It's only the monopoly of 2 big supermarkets that import food Woolworths and Coles , Thank gowd there are now other players and as people here get sick they stop buying the food and become very careful where it is grown and where it's packed . ergo I don't shop for fresh food at Coles anymore Woolworths are better but I'm watching Woolworths 3 strikes and I stop buying from them too and there on there first warning after what happened a few weeks ago .

Glenn, just don't eat processed food, then you are as safe as you can be.

Every time food is processed that is another chance for contamination.

Zika virus a threat to blood supply in affected areas

Many countries battling outbreaks of the Zika virus are overwhelmed by efforts to control the mosquito population and spread of the infectious disease. But they also face the enormous challenge of trying to keep the blood supply safe.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there is a “strong possibility” that Zika can be spread through blood transfusions. The CDC says there are suspected cases of Zika transmitted by blood transfusions in Brazil. During the 2013 outbreak in French Polynesia, about 3 per cent of blood donors tested positive for Zika. Because as many as 80 per cent of people infected with the virus don’t develop symptoms, many blood donors may not realize they have it.

Ebola's Gone but Sierra Leone's Health System Is on Its Knees

The rows of white tents that used to house patients at the Ebola Treatment Centre in the Moyamba District of Sierra Leone have been disinfected and taken away, and the smell of smoke and chlorine that once filled the dusty air has faded.

This time last year, the centre was on the frontline of the fight against Ebola. At the weekend the country marked six months since it was declared free of the virus, thanks in part to the team of medics who worked here at the height of the epidemic. But while the threat of Ebola has diminished, a new, bigger public health emergency has silently erupted.

Urine Test Catches Zika Infection Better, CDC Says

A urine-based test for Zika virus infection has shown to be more effective than the common blood-based one for many patients, a development that could make testing for the infection easier.

The test could potentially aid efforts to control Zika, which is mainly carried by mosquitoes, as it is expected to spread further into North America in the coming months.

Angola's yellow fever outbreak could become 'global emergency'

Scientists in the US have warned that the shortage of yellow fever vaccines could spark a global health emergency.

An outbreak of the mosquito-borne viral disease has killed 277 people in Angola since December, according to the UN World Health Organization (WHO).

Yellow fever is not good , once apon a time if a place had yellow fever it would be burnt to the ground and if you had it you would have been killed than let you come into town .

Sounds like they need to quickly produce the vaccine and very large amounts of it very quickly.

Brazilian Researchers Find Evidence Zika Is Getting Worse

Brazilian researchers studying the Zika virus say they've found evidence it may have evolved into a new form that's more likely to damage brain cells and cause birth defects.

Puerto Rico Confirms Birth Defect in Fetus With Zika

Puerto Rican health officials said Friday they had confirmed the territory's first confirmed case of microcephaly caused by the Zika virus.

The mosquito-borne virus is spreading across the island, and health experts fear there will be more cases of severe birth defects caused by Zika.

African scientists make headway in grasping persistent TB bacteria, offer hope for the future

THE arrival of drug-resistant tuberculosis has significantly complicated global efforts to decrease the scourge of the disease.

Each year more than nine million people are infected with TB and another 1.5 million die. But the latest figures show that at least 20% of people diagnosed with the disease have “multiple-drug-resistant” TB. And about 9.7% of these also have “extensively-drug-resistant TB”.

Scientists clone Zika for vaccine race

US scientists have cloned the Zika virus - an important step towards fast-tracking a vaccine against the disease.

The man-made copy is a replica of the strain that is spreading across the Americas and has been linked to brain deformities in newborn babies.

In tests at the University of Texas, the clone could infect mosquitoes - the carrier of Zika - and cause disease in laboratory mice.

Experts say they can use this in experiments to design a good vaccine.

Lucky Europe.

Zika virus may reach Europe this summer

The Zika virus could spread to Europe this summer, although the likelihood of an outbreak is low to moderate, the World Health Organization has said.

Areas most at risk are those where Aedes mosquitoes may spread the virus, like the Black Sea coast of Russia and Georgia and the island of Madeira.
