I live in Louisville, and it's mainly classical and rock n' roll. The version of country you'll find around here is called, "Bluegrass".

There are so many factors, both geological and cultural. The US is very diverse in both of those areas. In the western states you could be subject to wild fires, or earthquakes, but the climate might be very nice. I hear northern California has a nice climate. The deep south is quite hot and humid, but Texas is a bit dryer. I live in the north East, so I have adapted to shoveling snow. Near the east coast, there is a possibility of hurricanes, but living near the ocean can be very nice. I enjoy mountains, which are prevalent in Kentucky, West Virginia, Tennessee, and others. There is also the possibility of tornadoes, especially in the more flat regions. Music is in all flavors in most places, although some states are more tuned to one kind or another. Another thing to look at is what type of industry are you looking for. Hi tech, farming, logging, customer service are just a few. There are so many parts of the US I have never seen, and would like to.

Weather/geological events affecting any given house are rare, but they do happen. Rivers can flood, but if you are outside the flood plain, then you will see rain, but not flooding.

For my part, New Hampshire has 40,000 miles of lakes, rivers, and streams. It touches the ocean, and has beautiful mountains. Much of it is forest. I got used to shoveling snow, but it is certainly not my favorite task....

I should expand on this: Apart from Alaska I think
Oregon on the eastern side of the continental divide.
The weather would be a bit warmer, and we love that
sort of country. As for the people, we like Americans.
I sort of misunderstood the thread at first, but Donald
pointed me in the right direction.

The real question is what do you want? We probably have it. I have lived in all 3 west coast states, Colorado, New Mexico, Tennessee, Ohio, and Florida. Do you want hot and dry, hot and wet, wet and cold, dry and cold? Do you want small town, big city or country? Mountains, plains, beaches, forests, rocks, buildings. Suggest what you are looking for and we probably have it.

I was born in California, I have traveled some, mainly to Oregon, Nevada and Arizona, Me if I could I'd live up in Big Bear CA, snow in the winter and 80F's at most in the Summer, up in the Mountains.

I don't know what state I would be in when I come to live in America :)

.. but I fancy North Dakota.

Wide open spaces, ginormous buffaloes, endless fields of sunflowers, not too many people and the vast lake Sakawea.

Mind you it doesn't have earthquakes so that might be a little boring but otherwise it looks a great place to be.

Some where to loose oneself in for a lifetime.

The only downside is that it seems to be illegal to lie down and sleep with your shoes on!.... I wonder if it's illegal to sleep with someone elses shoes on?

No wonder in all those cowboy movies they were always stealing each others boots... They were going to North Dakota. :)

I don't mind coastal South Carolina. I like weather events, and we get some awesome lightning displays during the summer (EF1 tornadoes are rare, but happen maybe once every 2-3 years), we get the occasional hurricane (which as of late, seems to skirt by and slam the outer banks of North Carolina.. so we just get 30-60mph winds and rain for a few hours).

The summers aren't absolutely awful, but we do get a few days over 100*F (38*C) typically in August, with humidity at pretty high levels, so the heat index works out to 115-120*F on those days. That typically lasts about 2-3 weeks and then starts to come back down to 105-110*F.

As far as winter... we drop below freezing maybe... 4 nights every winter, and not consecutively.

Cost of living isn't very high, unless you go into the posh areas of town, but the suburban sprawl has some good choices and variety.

The down-side is... there's not really much of anything fun to do around here. And the job market isn't amazing. Taxes are low, and gun laws are pretty reasonable. Have to have a concealed permit to carry at all, and that just involves a background check and an 8-hour instructional course on the weekend, don't need a permit to have one in the glovebox of the car.




Having spent my whole life without having to deal with snow and ice, I do kind of want to live somewhere that gets more of that than we get here (once every 5-10 years, we'll get snow that melts the next day), but I've been told by lots of people that once you deal with it for a whole winter.. you'll never want to deal with it ever again. So I think coastal SC is a pretty good balance between having an actual winter without snow/ice, and not being a year-round sauna (anywhere along the Gulf coast).

After reading these posts I am still happy with the Puget Sound region of Western Washington, the only caveat is you should tolerate moss. It is very green here.
