Last Friday SpaceX had a successful launch deploying a satellite but due to the extra height needed the first stage was unable to quite slow enough for a successful landing.

Don't know why it doesn't make a full orbit, before coming down?! ;)

Quite simple really - the first stage, which is the bit they are trying to land, is not capable of reaching orbit.

(And given the problems they are having getting the first stage to land from its current sub-orbital altitudes I would imagine they would have an even lower success rate from orbital altitudes.)

Falcon's first stage has landed on a barge. See video at theregister.co.uk

SpaceX has just accomplished their second successful launch and landing of it's Falcon 9 booster. I wonder how large of a payload they can put in orbit and still have enough fuel for a successful landing.

That all depends on the orbit you want to get to...

It has put in a geostationary orbit the JCSAT-14 Japanese communication satellite. On the Italian SpaceX Web site they say it has been put up to 36 km, but I believe 36000 km is more correct.

Still another Falcon 9 success, putting a telecommunication satellite in a geostationary orbit, and landing the first stage on a barge. Bravo Elon Musk, but I cannot afford to buy your Tesla Car, it costs too much for me.

That video from the stage's POV was very nice. Don't know if they had a camera angle like that for the first 3, but if they did, I don't think they've publicly released them.

What is being done by SpaceX and Orbital Sciences Corporation reminds me of an opinion expressed by Freeman J. Dyson in his book "Disturbing the Universe" in 1979. I have the Italian edition, otherwise I would quote the last paragraph of Chapter "Saturn 1970". Read it if you have the English edition.

Another crash landing on a barge, with one of three rocket motors failing, after putting two communication satellites in high orbit. This consumes much of the fuel, and the landing part of the mission is more risky. But Elon Musk is glad, because he got paid for orbiting the satellites.

They don't seem to have much luck . Mite be better to start the shuttle program back up 3 accidents in 100 odd missions is better than Space - X so far !

All the hoopla about SpaceX being a private venture. Last time I checked Boeing and Lockheed Martin are private companies. SpaceX is now just another government contractor and has to meet the same requirements as the others.

Failure to land after launch isn't a game breaker for the government but I'm sure some of the reason for SpaceX's lower cost is based on reuseability.

Bob landing upright with rockets is always going to bed hard .

The shuttle way does seem more reliable

The Poms have a guy working on a jet rocket hybrid type engine maybe Space - X needs to rethink what there doing or quickly fall behind .

Rocket mite be ok in deep space but first you have to get up there safely or at least as safe as possible .

On July 16 SpaceX will launch its Dragon spacecraft to the ISS, full of scientific instrumentation. Read the NASA web page.

Someone building shuttle engines after everyone has decided the shuttle concept is dead after it killed 14 because crap falls off it on ascent and exhaust gases can go sideways into the gas tank? Wonder how he expects to put a jet engine in the middle of a cigar tube rocket?

Don't get me wrong, it will have its application. But it is going to be on some military killing machine.

Your comments were very harsh and unfair to the shuttle and the shuttle program which by and large was a huge success. I remember before the first shuttle launch they were expecting a 25% failure rate. Had that been the case they never would have gotten past the 8th launch.

Just from that comment you have not watched the link . Nothing to do with the shuttle , it was a different project called H.O.T.O.L and it wer'nt a American project either
