75 years ago on Monday the USAAF came to Britain. The rest is history.

Putting this out there as someone somewhere may know of some & provide some assistance. The staff at Madingley do a great job.

Maybe so, but many in this region miss seeing the A10's from Alconbury.

Whatever one thinks nowadays, it cannot deny the sacrifices those boys made, so should be remembered.

That's true Sirius i'll give you that but lets just say they were "tolerated" around here in their last 3 years and they wer'nt missed when they left , apart from the antique dealers who couldn't shift their sh#te onto the "locals" after they left !!

This is the Café so can political comments be kept out, especially this thread.

What one thinks of other nations is besides the point. History is history & leave it at that.

"There are three things wrong with the Americans
They're over paid, over sexed, and over here".

Yet many forget that if it wasn't for the "foreign" squadrons during the Battle of Britain, the air war would have been lost.

A timely reminder...

"On July 4 of most years, in a corner of Boxgrove graveyard in Sussex, fresh flowers lie on the grave of one of these foreigners: Pilot Officer Billy Fiske, the first American to die in the Battle of Britain. “The King of Speed” lies between two British soldiers, a sapper in the Royal Engineers and a corporal in the East Lancashire Regiment. A small American flag sometimes snaps in the wind above his final resting place. On his headstone the following words are inscribed for all to see:

He died for England"

Correct, there were 4 Polish Airforce squadrons 300, 301, 302 & 303, two of which fought in the Battle of Britain.

& 304, 305, 306, 307, 308, 309, 315, 316, 317, 318 & 663.

There were also French pilots, like Pierre Clostermann, who wrote a book about his years in the RAF. Le grand circus, if I remember the correct French title.
Tullio
But my favored book on the Battle of Britain is "The last enemy", by Edmund Hillary, an Australian like John Hillary, the conqueror of Everest. The title is a quotation from Saint Paul

Yes, the Big Show.

The end credits of the film "Battle of Britain" provides a unique list of all the nationalities that fought in the battle.

A correction for the previous poster. The Polish Air Force was destroyed in Poland. All the polish squadrons were R.A.F.

"HMS Belfast is one of only three remaining vessels from the bombardment fleet which supported the Normandy landings on 6 June 1944. The other vessels are the destroyer USS Laffey, part of the historic ships grouped at Patriots Point, South Carolina, and the dreadnought battleship USS Texas at San Jacinto, Texas."

Be nice to visit the other 2 :-)
