It's a boomerang launcher, for when you can't get them to come back under your own steam. It's not foolproof though because they can end up coming back without ever going forward and give you quite a nasty bruise :/

Is it for testing the hardness of something?

Not the hardness. Something else.

I think Gary had it but didn't want to run for the win. So Carlos, your it.

Eprouvette: an old-time device that was used to test the strength of gunpowder. Fill the device with 'powder, fire it, and the explosion in the barrel pushes the gauge out; the further it sweeps, the stronger the gun powder.

Thank you Admiral. I had it for a while too but was waiting for someone else to take it. But I am back now. Next visit to the San Francisco area will be first weekend in Dec. So let's see if any can figure this tool out, before then.

where is the focus?

I imagine it's those three tiny holes on that flat bit on the left...

I'd draw an arrow on it and repost the picture but tinypic has been driving me crazy so I won't. Everyone will just have to work it out from what I've said above...

Glad to be of help ;)

I cannot seem to confirm that. He did correspond with the Society and was offered membership but don't think he was ever became a member or fellow.

Maybe it's hint time. Just a small one. Very small, like microscopically small.
