Don't you mean ravel?

As in Bolero?

No I mean the opposite of unravel.

Do you mean sweeping crumbling pavement? http://www.roadscience.net/services/distress-guide/raveling

He might be talking about Ravel for lawyers and judges.

Hm. That does seems more likely than the APL operator.

So yes, I mean 'ravel', as in weave or entangle..

Which leads me to believe you may be very, very close to knowing this item's true purpose.

p.s. pardon for the delay, I've been in news-binge mode watching the pocket-coup in Turkey

Well.. it seems like I've stumped everyone - It's a lasagna comb, for unravelling large clumps of cooked, sticky noodles while adding olive oil. I've deleted the link to the original, unfortunately, so.. as a man much wiser than I once said, that's my word and I'm sticking to it.

I'll pass the baton to whoever is so inclined, my tool-fu is quite weak and others are more worthy than I. This pause was worth it, too.. the course of world history changed over the past week or two.

Why would a needle be involved?

Both of you are on the right track, but there is a specific name for this gizmo, and it's not a hemming foot.

Ding ding ding!!! Carlos, you win.

The mystery tool is called The Ruffler. It's one of several attachments that can be used on my mother's Singer sewing machine. I found the attachments inside their original box inside the seat cushion compartment of the sewing machine's chair. The date inside the instruction book is written, 1957. My mother was never into sewing per se, but she hemmed dresses for herself, and pants for me, growing up. We've just used it as a piece of furniture for many years. The sewing machine folds down inside the table, and voila you have a nice extra place to set things in the dining room. It has sat there for a long time. Still works... I plugged it in and gave it a whirl, but didn't try to attach our mystery gizmo.

The instruction booklet talks about how to use The Ruffler(sounds like a Batman character)

Thank you Gordon. You called that one too early. I had plenty of puns under foot just waiting for others to venture a guess of that tool.
Well here is one that has seen better days. Let see if any recognized what this is.

Well, it looks like a very fancy tin can crusher to me.

Exhausting only because of repeated use and sorry not a tin can crusher. But it was used on metal.

Manual planishing hammer. I'd rather use a pneumatic modern one.
Watching tv does come to some good. I have watched enough hot rod fabercation shows to guess what the mystery tool is.
