Now I think that know what it is. At least I think I do. Mrs. Anniet is only showing the bottom part of this tool. I have seen them on tv. And finally my brain went "Bingo, Bango and Bongo."
Hopefully this is written in the style of Anniet.
The answer and big reveal is: adjustable walking pole

If you are of a sensitive disposition and are reading this on a large screen, it might already be too late. But if you are and you're not and it isn't, then you might still have time and may wish to leave now.

Thank you for taking the time to pop in though ;)

*edge warily past some toolizens more than others*

Thank you for all your contributions so far everyone, and apologies for not being here sooner *knit eyebrows together* My chair developed a fault yesterday, and it's lasted most of today too, so far.

Doesn't matter what I do, it won't let me sit down for more than two minutes without setting off an interruption elsewhere in the house. Yes. It is maddening *roll one outraged eye around house and other around bony perimeter* If you find you're reading this in the run-up to Christmas, then you'll know the issue is an ongoing one.

Let me see now...

If I may say so, Grant *helpfully point at Grant so everyone can see him* "sort of a felt tip pen" started excellently! Well done :)

Then things disintegrated rather rapidly. From... *helpfully point at Grant's f so everyone can see it* there. No, not that one. The second one. That's it :) That may have been when you got ideas about star watching, I don't know, but I hope it was a nice interlude? :) Anyway, you will be pleased to know that you got back on track very promisingly just before your star mission started. So well done :)

*lope eyes round thread* you will want to bear this in mind people.

*carefully aim nose at Graham and start backing away* what an excellent design modification that would be, Graham. Thank you for that :) I personally would put the depth shield several feet in front of the tool myself, but everyone has their preferences... The fact that you hit on temperature as being somehow involved with this tool was inspired. Well done :)

Of course, it can be used without the protective depth shield too...

*lurch eyes to a halt on most distant person in room* you might want to bear that in mind with your "Probity probe with depth stopper gauge for backside down under", Admiral because as it happens, I DO have a picture of one being readied for use, in just such a manner.

*beam picture into thread*

Oh...

that didn't work.

*beam image tags into thread*

There...

that's much better! :)

Laser scalpel, Jaundiced Eye? Well why not!? :) Anyone need anything trimmed or sliced at?

*look hopefully round thread for volunteer* I think it would need some not insignificant upgrading though, first... probably carried out by someone more professional than myself if it's not to get quite lethal quite quickly. Unintentionally speaking of course :)

After that, I don't see why we couldn't smelt some lead or tin :) Are you thinking alchemy, Doctor Who Fan? Or plumbing? *point helpfully at Doctor Who Fan so everyone can see him* because as the tool stands at present, you're wrong too. Yes. That is another way of saying you're not right... :) But its intentional uses are on two specific surfaces/materials. I suspect its unintentional uses are a lot more diverse though... but thank you for helping us distil that fact out of the mayhem and carnage that has been the predominant hallmark of this tool's time in the spotlight.

Carlos. You're very close. You're so close in fact I should probably declare you the winner... but I haven't decided how picky I'm feeling today... yet. So I'm not going to say which one of your two guesses (wood burner or hair remover) I'm talking about yet. No :)

Yes *imperious blink* it does mean you're going to have to carry on reading this post...

I know it by a name that describes its value-added output as a tool, rather than its functional input as one, and if that doesn't make sense in your heads people, don't worry. It does in mine :) and I could always try to clarify it for you again, in a whole new and interesting way. You just have to ask :))

Umbrella shaft without the fabric and other stuff.

If you're referring to my just-press-the-button-and-it'll-unfurl-into-a-protective-canopy-above-your-head-so-you-don't-get-wet-anniet, but instead becomes a "fabric and other stuff" low earth launcher that descends into traffic three lanes away, Admiral, then yes... the tool left pointing at the sky to ward off rain looked exactly like that, except it was considerably larger.

So no. It's not :)

That should help you infer something about what went bang in your head... Ideas do that in mine too sometimes :) but we're not here to discuss that which then led you and Gary down an icy slope clutching between you, one (approximately) six inch long ski pole.

*Look at everyone else* I wonder if they had the depth shield deployed...?

If only I'd gotten here sooner... *wring one hand briefly* No, it's not any form of walking device whatsoever, either for cold or hot weather.

I have seen them on tv.

*slow blink* News was it? well if they're being used the way everyone wants to use them in here, I'm not surprised.

But you did say something very interesting... which is pertinent to this tool. So well done :) It's not all there.

Let me see. How best can I describe what's missing so you understand...

Following you down the ski slop at what would have been a fixed distance, was a plug. Depending on the version you were investing your hope in, there may have been a transformer too,,,

Carlos... I've decided to be picky :)

ok then a soldering iron.

erm...

but it would remove hair too.

well yes it would, but...

Just a little painful.

*contemplate Carlos for several long minutes*

I considered breaking this to you more gently, Carlos, but I now see why your cat thought you made a suitable climbing surface... you clearly have a higher threshold for pain than those of us that squeal throughout a soothing waxing session

*impressed blink*

So I'm not going to beat around any longer.

It's not a soldering iron. You've moved further away from the close that you were and are now firmly in the territory of the likes of the Admiral, Jaundiced Eye and Graham.

I'd say well done *cool stare at no one in particular* but I wouldn't mean it

:)

Oh, and *flick an eye at Grant* I don't want to worry you or anything, but I get the feeling not having any to remove is hardly a guarantee that you're safe from say, a blister patterning tool or some other torture device they might suddenly come up with.

Perhaps I should have made it clearer when I said

you will want to bear this in mind people.

...that I was referring to what preceded me bringing your brains into the equation, not what followed their introduction.

Nor is it anything to do with hair.

I admit I may have omitted to tell you that when I discussed materials with Doctor Who Fan, I probably should have said one had already been identified by someone other than himself. It wasn't snow... which reminds me... has anyone heard from Gary? *cool stare at the Admiral in particular* he looked a little alarmed last time we saw him I thought...

I might pop back with a clue in a bit... or I might not.:)

Could it be even more artistically related?
Would you like to see my etchings?
Or is it a multi-purpose tool.

Yeah, I have been having trouble lately controlling
my responses. I think it's the heat, or the rain, or
perhaps it may be my problem.... na not that!

Could it be even more artistically related?

What? Than this ---v

A tool for the use of cauterization after a bris?

I can't say for sure.

I've not seen any of Ian's finished works :)) I imagine he takes quite an artistic approach though. But yes, my mind was set on it as a tool for the arts, although possibly a little less... dark ;)

Would you like to see my etchings?

Yes please :))

Or is it a multi-purpose tool

I imagine it could be used for anything that might need varying degrees of scorching short of incineration or combustion, Carlos, but left unattended it could be used for both of the latter. And I'm sure it has practical/technical uses too but those are grey areas to me.

Wood burning pen for pyrography

Pyrography pen IS what I was looking for. Well done Admiral! And apologies to you Carlos, Wood burner is a perfectly correct term for it too :) but when I came over all picky, I came over all artsy too.

I will now send you a PM Admiral :)

Thank you too, to everyone for your suggestions. They were a lot of fun :)

edit: to say the PM's been sent and for a belated apology to Grant. Your guess made me blink a lot :) It was most devious of me not to reveal that with "pen" you were very very very close. Especially after you awarded me the win too ;/ I'm sorry :)

oh...and did we say we like humans too? Well we do :)
