The next time you open up a Terminal screen (or an X11 session), all you have to do is type "boinc_4.13" for BOINC to do its voodoo that it do so well. :-) |

Here is an alternative procedure that I use with my many G5's. You must have OS X.3 for BOINC/SETI to run. You must download "boinc_4.13_powerpc-apple-darwin" from the http://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu/sah/ website. Then do the following steps: 1. Make a folder named BOINC inside the Applications folder. 2. Move the file boinc_4.13_powerpc-apple-darwin into that folder. 3. Go to Utilities and Launch "Terminal" from there. 4. In the Terminal window, type: cd .. and enter, then cd .. and enter again. Type cd Applications and press enter. Type cd BOINC and enter. 5. Open the BOINC folder while the Terminal window is where you left it. Click on the boinc_4.13_powerpc-apple-darwin file and drag it into the Terminal window. Then Press enter. 6. The Terminal window will ask you for a web site. Enter http://setiathome.berkeley.edu and press enter. 7. Terminal will ask you for your account key. Type it in and press enter. 8. BOINC will run. After you get it to run in Terminal, you can go to http://www.versiontracker.com/php/search.php?mode=basic&action=search&str=SETI+Control&plt%5B%5D=macosx&x=15&y=8 Download the 3.2 version of SETI Control. Then after it's downloaded, do the following: 1. Unstuff it and move the folder, usually named SETIControl, into the BOINC folder. 2. Open the program "SETI Control. 3. Go back to the Terminal Window and type "Control c". That will Exit the BOINC/SETI program. 4. Back to SETI Control. Under the "SETI Control" program. Under the Menu Bar, SETI Control, is where the preferences live. 5. Enter the Path to where BOINC lives under the Full pathname of BOINC core client: 6. Enter the "Project URL:" which is: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu 7. Enter your "Account ID:" 8. Optionally, you can check the "Start BOINC Client when SETI Control starts" box. Subsequently, you can hide or quit the SETI Control program. TOO, you can go to your account and make it start up whenever you log on!!! I run several G5's with SETI Control and have NO PROBLEMS whatsoever!!! GOOD LUCK Larry LarryB56 |

The last time I used SETI Control it did't run - good to see it's been updated! Again, if any problems show up, let us know. :-) |

You should use Explorer or Netscape to download the file. Safari has a problem with upstuffing the files from BOINC web site. I had to use Explorer to do mine and then it worked ok. |

Thanks everyone for you clear instructions on how to use Terminal etc, the best I've found and the first I could understand! One more question. I'm still running Jaguar 10.2.8. So which BOINC client should I download? And from where? I've also looked for earlier versions of Seti Control, but when I click on older versions in Version Tracker it simply redirects me to the Seti Control homepage which only seems to have the latest version. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks again! |

For Seti Control http://homepage.mac.com/delaneyrm/SETIControl.html I believe this will work for all version of OS X, if in daught contact the author of the program from this page or from his home page. and for the person who is still having problems. 1. Start by using either Internet Explorer or Netscape. Do not use Safari as it has problems with the uncompression program. 2. Go to seti's create an account page 3. You need a user account. 4. Which OS X are you using if: a. OS 10.3+(Panther or Tiger) --- Then go to this page http://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu/download.php and download the Mac OS/x 10.3+ version. b. OS 10.2x (Original or Jaguar) then go to the MacNN site: http://members.dslextreme.com/~readerforum/forum_team/boinc.html c. Choose which CLI is right for your machine type. ex: G4, G5, G3 each has it own program. 5. On all pages in step 4, click to download, make sure you know where it is going. When it finished downloading it will have two files that look the same. One is the correct one and the other is just there. The correct one should look similer to this: boinc_4.1.13_powerpc-apple-darwin (the new version). 6. Install Seti Control 7. The go to it(Seti Control) preference panel. Add you location of your boinc program. Ex: (Main Folder)/(Folder)/boinc_4.1.13_powerpc-apple-darwin 8. Put in the URL from the email Seti or any at home site gives you in the URL location. 9. Put your account ID in the that location (this is also from the same email). 10. Start your seticontrol program. 11. you may now either quit the program or hide it. Either way it will run BOINC. Any other questions post them. Like what are you doing and where are you lost at. So that we can help you solve it. |

So which BOINC client > should I download? And from where? BOINC won't run on 10.2.8. Several attempts have been made to compile it for Jaguar, but all have been "eratic" at best. For now, 10.3.x is required. This issue is with BOINC not the SETI app, so it applies to all BOINC based projects. Team MacNN - The best Macintosh team ever. |

BOINC won't run on 10.2.8 I got BOINC to run on X.2.8. I'm not sure if it was the precompiled or the source code version, but it did run under X.2.8... |

A great many potential users would like to know. Was it the current release client version, or a prior version? A special compile from somewhere? What is the platform configuration? Did you have to do anything special to get it to run? Team MacNN - The best Macintosh team ever. |

This was ages ago (October/November?) using the TiBook's original installer disc (X.2.3) and the BOINC 4.13 source. I think I must have used the source code, because I remember that gcc wouldn't -mcpu=7450 -fast beacuse they're only available in gcc 3, which shipped with Panther. All I had to do was install the Developer's Tools.mpkg - After that it was follow the instructions for a UNIX/Linux box. I don't remember if I upgraded to X.2.8 before or after compiling the BOINC client... I'm currently "stuck" in X.3.7 with UFS - I can't zip back to a previous X.2.3 install without killing off my files. Next time I crash, I'll start up from X.2.3 instead of X.3.0... I found my log (Yes, I do occasionally take notes!) - It was run under X.2.8's X11 instead of Terminal. The X11 SDK has to be downloaded. |

I have a complete mac install processes as part of my general process. It includes images and every thing. Follow the install link off the front page and then in the processes' step #9 there is a link to the complete thing. |
