Message 1767963 - Posted: 27 Feb 2016, 2:15:17 UTC - in response to Message 1767705.

Has been somewhat troubling to me as of late.

And this post has been coming for some time.

The Cafe has become at times a place of misfits and disgruntled what me nots.
All who are just waiting for another post to place another mislead, misinformed, and unrelated rant against another. That should be left to the politics free for all.

And I am not innocent.

I am sensing a greater cloud of angst here than I have in many, many years.
Personal attacks are rampant, even though forbidden expressly by the posting guidelines. There is no restraint anymore.

And unlike the 'mod wars' period when nothing was sacred, I am seeing that not much is anymore today either.

I am a man who feels it necessary to speak his peace. I shall always do so, and I have been excommunicated at times from these very forums because of that penchant.

This might seem odd, coming from me, but And I have SEEN the light...profanity in the clip excluded, of course...chuckles....

But, what I am getting at is that perhaps the time of free for all in the Seti Cafe has ended.

There are some who should obviously be modded that have not been enough. Myself included.
We do not have enough mods in enough time zones to deal with this.

I am no longer qualified to be a mod...been there done that. Failed.

Can we call on Fred to mod constantly? No, he is, and should be, the court of last resort.

I best get offa my high horse now, or nobody will take me seriously.

I am getting ready to step off my high horse without breaking an ankle.................ooops..

Dang, that hurt.

I await you leading by example.

Saw the movie, just had to emulate.

Got an RV?

BTW, models of the RV from the flick are available on ebay.

We ALL contribute to the climate of these forums when we post things that are unkind..

What some of us get in a PM could be called incitement to riot too. Heh heh :-) Next time I get addressed as Sambo there, I won't sink to the level it came from.

The quickest "fix" to making the tone of the Cafe more pleasant is for posters to make a concerted effort to be as kind as possible as often as possible.

Never a truer word spoken :-) Respect! +1

I am sorry to hear you had such a nasty pm. Unfortunately we cannot control what is sent via pm and strongly suggest that you use the blocking feature should anyone send you anything like that again.

Any comment like that made on the public boards would, certainly in my opinion, result in an immediate ban.

With so many different posters from so many different backgrounds on these boards you're are going to come across people who you wouldn't normally associate with. This is one of the strengths of these forums as well as one of its weaknesses. Most of the time we all get along. Those of us who volunteer as moderators do our best to balance the need for free speech with making all posters feel welcome. Its not an easy job, and there is no way we are going to make everyone happy.

This thread started out with I believe good intentions, and an initial positive response from the management,

No, please please we are just volunteers that have a few extra buttons that allows us to try and keep the SETI@home forums a pleasant place to be.

I do not, and never have seen myself as "management" that in my mind would be Fred.

As an aside I did not really understand when I took this voluntary position just how the PM system can be used.

I have been accused of being a lying, cheating left wing, bastard who only got made a moderator to harass a certain person, I won't even mention some of the language. I have also been "ordered" to un-hide a post "or else".

It got to a point early on when I didn't even want to look at my PM's

After a time you have to just get on with the job. Which I believe in and feel the current team are trying hard to be fair, all decisions are discussed, no one has a post hidden without a good reason and no one would get a long band without plenty of warning.

I did 2 years as a mod. It sure is full of stress. To be fair to the mods, They get it from the posters, From each other when they do have discussions on what should happen and from Fred if they do make a bad choice.

I still say the Café is getting to rowdy.

I guess my only wish would be that all here, and I do not exclude myself, would find a bit more in themselves and try to understand and forgive others at times.

It is far too easy to sit and judge somebody by the written word. I understand how important the written word is, but you cannot get all nuances from it as you can in person.

For example, when I write about my current struggles and pain and sorrow about my dear Tigger cat, not one of you can quite see the tears flowing down my face.
I know you try to, and I do know that some of you care very much. But it's not like you can be here to kiss the tears from my cheeks.

That being said, the caring and understanding I get here is quite invaluable, and I thank you all for it.

James, with all due respect, one indicator of both the vitality and the rowdiness of the Cafe is how many days it's been since the thread showing at the bottom of p. 1 has been posted in. As I respond, it is currently 8 days. It's been that way a long time. At a time when the Cafe was both rowdy yet had a vitality to it, what would show at the bottom of the page was probably, at best, 12 hours old. Maybe at worst 1 or 2 days old.

Uhh..........

We never really die, we just go elsewhere.
I am about to go on one of the finer travels than most of you shall ever experience. I am really sad to say that i cannot take you with me.
My journey is for one passenger, and one only.

Tigger has a special ticket. One granted in a few milleniums by those who know the need and have granted same to me and Tigger.
We are both leaving for a trip beyond. '
Tigger trip.

I cannot thank you enough fir all that you have given me throughout this experience of my 59 years on this planet.

It has been most wonderful, but now I have to leave.

It has been very kind time you have afforded me.

Just another plane of existence, and I am not going to be here forever.
My life will not end when my body cannot function any more.

It is the mind, kids. It is the mind. I am not leaving ever.
You can shut the whole project down, and I shall remain in this space and time.

Forever.

I will admit to not reading every word above my post. But I see a path people want but are not getting all the time. But a general "want" is what I am perceiving.
There should be a sign somewhere that says. "This is a Café. Not a 'Roadhouse'. Please try to remember that when you post."

The last post shows as being 2 days ago, and maybe I should let a sleeping dog lie, but I want to add a couple of cents.

I try not to attack anyone personally, no matter how tempted I may be. If I do say something that argues with something someone else said, I'm arguing the substance, not against the person. If I really don't like a person, I usually just ignore them. Sometimes this even means I ignore a thread that person frequents.

If the truth be known (and I only believe God\s or Mathematicians know the truth - The rest of us have to deal in honesties..) every one who enters an open forum like the cafe - an "Agora" is both a protagonist, a suplicant and a 'Mod'.

I'm an odd one I know but I hope I don't carry angst.

I appreciate the cafe. I don't always agree with people or it's running... but then I love the fact that it happens and I get to join in in my odd way.

I don't know how the moding works here in this forum. Perhaps the forum should be written so Mod's can not be sent personal messages via the forum and any messages go to a general moding pool.

msattler. You both speak your 'piece' and your 'peace' and I think we are better for it.

Agora is our ancient place to speak, be and interact.

It's madening and frustrating but it's what \ all? we have.

I have seen you for a long time and you are valued and part of us :)

That said everyone is allowed a letting off of steam, a break or a change.

Thank you so very much for that comment, cRunchy. Although I am certain there are more than a few Setizens that perhaps do not agree with it....LOL.

Mark, between your p&%%ed ranting/spamming of threads that arn't your own and the "Go Fund Me" threads is what is really pis&%$g people off here and your abusive PM's just make things so much worse.

Most of us arn't bludgers or out of control alcohol abusers, but these things are turning most average/new users off big time.

You don't actually own these forums and that you must accept.

Wake up to yourself buddy and think of the damage that you are doing to these forums with your stupid actions.

Cheers.
