A meteor exploded over the Atlantic Ocean and nobody noticed

This is pretty amazing. A meteor with an energy equivalent to 13,000 tons of TNT explodes and no one noticed? Guess that answers the question about a treen in the forest.

Read through all the links back to the source. The source does not say there was an explosion. It says that much potential energy was in the meteor, much (all?) of which would have been burned off in heat.

I'd think that if there was a 13 kiloton air blast over the ocean that would have registered on tidal gauges.

Here is the NASA source.

You are correct it does not say explosion. It uses the term "Radiated Energy" But notice that he had no velocity components. I think that resolves into a lay definition of an explosion.
