Hi there,
I'm wondering, if someone could let me know, what the minimum configuration is that a computer would need to run Boinc. I have 2 PCs at home, but I'm wondering more on the Macs and the Linux versions.

Thanks,

AFAIK- minimum requirements- 32bit Operating system & 64MB available memory & 800*600 minimum resolution support at 16bit colour depth if you want to run the screen saver.
That's just off the top of my head though.
Hopefully somone will be along that actually knows...

Oh, and for Apple users OSX is the minimum OS requirement.

I have a G5 with OS 9. Can I run boinc on it?

How do I get the application to run after the file is unzipped?

I need to change the kind attribute of the file so it will run as an application. It looks like a doc file now!

I dunno how you're getting the G5 to run 9.2.2, but... no. You could have run SETI Classic...

The minimum is this: OS X 10.0 and about 32MB RAM. In fact, if you want to dedicate a box to BOINC, download Apple's Darwin ISOs and run that instead of OS X - You'll get a lot more speed out of it (I got a 10%-15% boost on a TiBook 15" 867MHz).

I made a mistake. It is a G3 with OS 9.2.2.

To bad boinc will not run on it.

It will run, but under OS X, Darwin, or any other fine PPC Linux.
Is this an "OldWorld" Mac?

I am not a MAC user. I just have one laying around at work and I thought I could use it.

How do you make a file executable. This computer does not have chmod +x.

Yeah... OS 9.2.2 doesn't have a terminal so it can never be made executeable. If you can put OS X/Linux on it, then you can easily chmod it.

Since you're not a Mac user it may be that you can run OS X on the G3 after all without knowing it, but I need more information. (No snobbyness intended)

In the Apple Menu, there ought to be an item called "Apple System Profiler". Select it. Once the program is open, select "New Report" from the File menu. It will offer you a list of items - make sure that the "System Profile" check-box is indeed checked, and press "OK". A new window will come up. At the top of the new window there will be two radio buttons. Select the one that reads "Text Document". Select the text, copy it, and paste it here.

.o0(I hate it when good hardware isn't being put to use...)
