What will the Republicans do if (and a BIG if) Obama Nominates a Republican? Huh? 1. Clyde, that was my post, not Sarge's. 2. Boehner is *former* Speaker of the House. Not in the Senate. 3. Senate Majority Leader is McConnell. 4. Votes needed to confirm is 51. The 60 votes is needed to stop filibusters via cloture. |

Their dutyWhat will the Republicans do if (and a BIG if) Obama Nominates a Republican? Gary, define 'their duty'... The Constitution wisely split the process up into two parts. The Founders felt that giving either the Executive or the Legislative the complete power to fill vacancies in the various Appointed positions in the Federal Government was a BAD idea. The Executive's portion of the process is to come up with a name. Then the Senate has the power to act on it (confirm/reject) or not as THEY see fit. The President has no Constitutional expectation that their nominee will even be considered by the Senate, much less confirmed. Just as the Senate has no Constitutional expectation that the President will even make a nomination. Especially since the position (Scalia's) is NOT established by the Constitution. Only the position of 'Chief Justice of the Supreme Court' is established by the Constitution. The number of Other Justices on the Supreme Court is established by Congress as Statue Law. Look at things from the other direction for a moment. Congress passes a law, and sends it to the President for their approval (signature). When Congress passes the legislation, there is zero Constitutional expectation that the President will sign it. The President might refuse (veto), or hold onto the legislation and refuse to do either (pocket veto). That is up to the President. Of course, Congress has recourse and can overrule a veto. Well same with appointments. Action on Appointments awaits the pleasure of the Senate. 'Do nothing'?!?! That IS the preferred state of affairs in Government. |

McConnell assigns to committee(s). Committee chair(s) refuse to hold hearings and thus issue report(s). Senate could take it back from the committee but not likely and I suspect that needs 60 votes. But parliamentary rules debate is getting OT. |

Hitler was a national socialist liberal. Did you learn this at the same school that taught you that chemical reactions took place at P-N junctions while a CPU executes instructions? I thought Trump misspoke when he said he loved the poorly educated (I'd hoped he meant the "less educated"), but if that's what were you were taught, then poorly educated seems a more appropriate label. [edits to fix typos] I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that ... |

Their dutyWhat will the Republicans do if (and a BIG if) Obama Nominates a Republican? Parliamentary bodies have the duty to act upon all matters put before them. That action may be to table or refer to committee. One of the most important duties of a presiding officer is to call the next item. That is why the office is so powerful. Part of his job is to make sure there is always a more urgent item than what he wants killed ready to be called. If not, he can't bury it and action will have to be taken. |

Well, we'll just have to see if you're right. I don't really understand your point here. Firstly, the high US dollar/low Canadian dollar is effecting our imports already. So wouldn't it get better with a lower US dollar, not worse? Also, as far I can see, everything here is made in China anyway. If Trump wins, everybody will forget about your prediction and you'll then start attacking the white house as if you've never been wrong in the past. Huh? Reality Internet Personality |

Huh?Intentionally invoking Godwin's law. In December 2015, Godwin cited several articles on Republican presidential candidate Donald J. Trump for their Nazi and Fascist comparisons.[13] |

Huh?Intentionally invoking Godwin's law.In December 2015, Godwin cited several articles on Republican presidential candidate Donald J. Trump for their Nazi and Fascist comparisons.[13] No, it's the effect of years worth of pundits conflating fascism with communism, Hitler with Stalin. Because there was totalitarianism and crimes against humanity, they can no longer tell the difference. The two extreme ends have been glued together to go from the one-dimensional line of a political spectrum to a topolgiocally non-homeomorphic circle. That, and a deliberately misleading name chosen by Hitler and his party seals the deal for them. It'd be like me changing my screen name to "Dr. Sarge, Professor of Economics, History, Psychology and Politics" and someone here believing me. (Then yelling at me for getting something wrong about Skinnerian theory.) [Guess what the next name change of a certain poster will be, once he's tired of the farm? ;)] Capitalize on this good fortune, one word can bring you round ... changes. |

Please, let's get back on topic, and stop the internal bickering. Without including Bobby's respnose in my reply, I say: I thought the GOP was supposed to be the party of integrity. If they thought Biden was wrong then, then why is it not wrong now. What would O.W. Holmes say? Capitalize on this good fortune, one word can bring you round ... changes. |

Obama to nominate Merrick Garland for the vacancy. Might it not be better for the Republicans to accept this nominee, rather than the Hillary appointed one next year. |

Not with a Republican Congress. With a Hillary win it will probably be a Democrat Congress as well. |

Not with a Republican Congress. Democrat super-majority most likely outcome if the tea fools quit their jobs by not having hearings. Wonder if their paychecks can be not issued for not doing their job .... |

Might it not be better for the Republicans to accept this nominee, rather than the Hillary appointed one next year. But if Trump is the GOP candidate then how many of the GOP that don't like him, and that could be 60% of them, either not vote or change sides. |

Ah the ignorance. Advice and consent. Have the hearing Monday. Tuesday vote to reject. So simple. Wash and repeat until Hillary nominates. Then eight more years of no votes, with several more positions open. Keep it up and the court will be empty and no law will ever be unconstitutional. The dictatorship so desperately wanted by the tea/freedom types will be theirs for the taking. |
