Very sad news today. :-( R.I.P. Edgar Mitchell Edgar Mitchell, who as part of the Apollo 14 mission in 1971 became the sixth man to walk on the moon, has died. Mitchell was 85 and lived in Lake Worth. Mitchell died Thursday night at a West Palm Beach hospice after a short illness, his daughter, Kimberly Mitchell, said. Our heroes are leaving us. Guess it's time for us to shine brighter. Thank you Edgar for setting a high bar, for taking risks and for showing us new horizons. RIP |

Hey, he walked on the moon. I should be so blessed upon my death bed. Could make a nice tombstone. Here lies a man who walked upon the moon. Gaze above you. "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |

He has gone on to his reward. Bon Voyage, Astronaut Mitchell. Thank you for your service. Donald Infernal Optimist / Submariner, retired |

Hey, he walked on the moon. A friend of mine used to work for a company called Celestis. For a fee, they would send a small vial of your ashes into space attached to a satelite or space probe. If memory serves, DeForrest Kelley (Mr. Scott from Star Trek) went to the Moon onboard the Lunar Polar Explorer. Donald Infernal Optimist / Submariner, retired |

Thank you, Chris, for the correction. It was late, and I was working from memory (which often doesn't work as well as it should these days). DeForest Kelly played the Doctor McCoy, James Doohan played Scotty. Donald Infernal Optimist / Submariner, retired |

Of the 12 men that walked on the moon, only 7 are left and they are all in their 80's. In a few years time they will all be gone, and as the USA flatly refuses to go back that will be left to the Chinese and other nations. What a sad end to Kennedy's proud speech in 1961. I remember that speech very well..........All of it. Kennedy was a most remarkable man. And his loss was also remarkable, sadly. His life could have been....amazing. Our only hope is that his voice shall continue to be heard this day as loud as it was in 1961. "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |

I remember that speech very well..........All of it. Thanks for posting the video link. I've seen parts of it before, but it's always inspirational to hear again. The mind is a weird and mysterious place |

I remember that speech very well..........All of it. Most people have never taken the time to listen to it in entirety. There was so much more in that speech than 'we shall go to the moon'. And, if I can go one step further, I believe the seeds of his assassination were sown that day, by that speech. He was not a man to be taken lightly, and those who would later profit by his death knew that then and there. "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |
