This old dog has more tricks up his sleeve than you've ever seen yet, but using kiddies toys for the sake of it isn't one of them.

There are times to accept that what you are comfortable with, and suits you, is better than trying to keep up with the crowd.

Well said.

Backups? How many people honestly do that?

I would not expect you to have heard of the iCloud or the fact that you set the phone to either back up to your computer or Wi-Fi or just use the iCloud, it's set and forget it does it for you.

A friend had her iPhone stolen and I got her a second hand one from e-bay, she had got a replacement sim card and once in the phone she logged on to her Apple account and the phone was restored exactly as it had been in less than half an hour

Apparently he had linked it to his smartphone and that was how he got an internet signal. Clever but a very expensive dongle!

Nor the fact that most phone contracts now can be "unlimited" everything, as is mine, I pay a fixed monthly rate for unlimited call minutes, unlimited texts and unlimited data. I don't ever use my land line now.

You are however 100% correct, someone in your postilion does not need one no idea why you would think you did. I have people at the 60+ who have and use smart phones, and I have others who are happy with their "dumb" phones and I would never dream of forcing anyone to change.

I remember you saying that all smartphones and tablets were the curse of modern society and should be banned!! I wonder what changed?

Im 63 now and have had a smart phone for 6 years now. I used to think I didn't need one. Im glad I was mistaken.
Now I use road maps when I drive long distance. But ive found uts when your within almost seeing distance that they fail. Pull out the smart phone and get a satellite view of where you are.
At work and need to convert a 7MM drill to The US inch, yep go to Machining mate or any of the other programs and it does the conversion for you.
However I think the younger folks who post every second of their lives 24/7 are idiots. You really want to post that pic of you in a toga holding a crack pipe and bottle of Jack Daniels for a prospective employer to see?

I would not expect you to have heard of the iCloud

NOTE iCloud not cloud, the iCloud is of course Apple and useful for backups of all things Apple automatically

However you can if you wish back it up to you computer over Wi-Fi also automatically.

As for knowing who know what about you. If you surf the internet or use e-mail through any normal browser then quite a lot of people know more than you might wish.

Can you please tell me when I ask a perfectly simple question you have to put "Sigh" as though talking down to someone.

Just plain rude!

PS as I am currently showing two over 70's how to use and iPhone and iPad feel free to ask for my help anytime

I've never quite trusted the idea of storing my stuff in a cloud, and for the same reason, I still use VHS tapes and recordable DVD's for my tv time-shifting.

Since I cling to my nice old dumb CRT, I've thought about getting a Roku or similar gizmo so I can get stuff from online streamed to the tv, but I still would want something tangible to put on the shelf if I do any recording.

Ah yes this latest streaming fad.

I'm on the cusp for the speed requirement, but it seems like a good way to get a movie since I don't have on-demand service with my standard cable.

The one thing that does annoy me about my CRT is the "cropping" of the picture due to the difference in screen ratio for newer programs and movies.

Most modern stuff is in wide screen format, unless you like old 40's/50's movies.

I do, but I watched Lawrence of Arabia recently, and it was a tiny sliver across my screen. I don't think I had the option of going full-screen.

That sounds like hard work! :)

I love my PVR.

I do use the cloud, but only for stuff that doesn't matter if it gets hacked. So all my teaching resources are up there. It means I can access them from any computer if I need them. That has been a total life saver at times.

I also love my 55 inch flat screen tv and the chromecast dongle I have attached to it so I can stream netflix to it. I love my smartphone, which I didn't know I needed until I had it. On our trip to see Angel and Eric I was able to watch our progress as we drove using the google maps. Which meant we knew when we were near enough for me to call to get them to get the beer ready!

It also means that I can check on the forums where ever I am, which is nice sometimes when I am waiting for something when out and about or I stop for a coffee. One advantage of the iphone (which I don't have) is the camera. The video has a high frame rate, so you can actually use it for experiments and data logging. My phone also has all my books on it, so I always have something to read when I need it. Its also great for being able to look up bus timetables, places to eat, and traffic reports when you are out and about.

I like my DVR. Then if I want to make a recording more tangible. I can make a copy of it on my computers hard drive. Then if necessary, I can edit out commercials.

Yes, we record everything then skip the commercials. Saves time and sadness.

Oh absolutely & the best I've found to be the most useful is a pen & paper.

Since leaving hospital, I have been logging everything that could assist the medics etc. Halfway through that I recalled the moment the paramedics arrived. They knew instantly I'd had a stroke so put me in a wheelchair & put me in the ambulance.

One paramedic said "you may want this" & grabbed my phone & usb cable. Didn't think much about that, & understandly why :-)

New year's eve phone went dead. Fortunately the bedside tv had a usb socket so wasn't too long before phone back in use.

Using just ONE App & just the one message, within an hour 31 people were aware of my situation & location - now if that had been a dumb phone instead of a smartphone?

Now back to the pen & paper: - Copied everything from computer to diary all the way from the 29th Dec to this morning. Several serious issues has arising from that stroke with one giving cause to call the emergency services this morning. On arrival, wasn't in a postion to boot up so passed the diary to a paramedic.

She got on the radio & a fast response ambulance turned up with a doctor on board. He read the diary & then gave an injection. This afternoon the relief was immense.

This is a good thread, it would be nice if it doesn't turn into a personal blog.

Oh & an expense dongle connected to a laptop? I've done that for numerous trips to London & back, total cost £0.00.

Thank you, but it wasn't meant as an update on my life but one that shows that all technolgy even a pen & paper still have their uses, regardless of who uses it.

@Rob. Thanks :-)
