Good evening I just wanted to know if it is doable to upgrade to 64 bit from 32 bit my is a retail key and is supposed to be good for either so I was wondering if I am stuck with 32 bit(my system was not up to handling 64 bit at the time) or is an upgrade possible using the same key. I think????? it should be but who knows about M$ nowadays. Thanks for any help.

Well, you can't just upgrade from an installed 32-Bit Version to a 64-Bit Version; instead, you will need to install from scratch a new 64-Bit Version. This usually requires buying that media; so, in so doing, you would also be buying a new Key to go with it... However; if as you say that your existing Key works for both, I suppose that in installing the 64-Bit Version, you could try reusing your existing Key... This would leave the 2nd bought Key for another system, maybe...??? Up to you, really...

Right, you have to reinstall the 64 bit version from scratch, but you don't need to buy a new DVD.
Instead you can download the 64 bit ISO directly from Micro$oft here:
https://www.microsoft.com/software-download/windows7
Just enter your retail key, download and burn the ISO to a DVD-R, that's it!

Thanks but I do not need to buy the media I already have the 64 bit installation files on a bootable usb drive(got the ISO direct from M$ since they pulled everything off of digital river) so I might have to try it and see what happens.

Is this because of the file system (like NTFS) being used for a given disc?

Or perhaps it rather is because of the difference between instructions for 32-bit and 64-bit operating systems instead?

Anyway, reading closer, a DVD is not using any of these file systems, including FAT.

Attach an external HD to the system and run Windows Easy Transfer on the system drive. This will put your system on the external HD.
Now install the 64 bit OS to the disk that was running your OS (Not the external drive). (As others have mentioned, it must be a scratch install.
After that is complete, run WET again and put your files and settings back onto the newly installed 64 bit HD.
All should almost be as it was before.

I have done many systems using this method.

Thanks for the help I will assume that an internal drive will work the same as an external(I could pull the drive and make it external if needed) so I will give it a go and see. The upgrades that I plan for my daily driver(as soon as I get my refund) will probably require it anyway so it will have me a little bit ahead of the game.Thanks again.

The retail version I bought came with both 32 & 64 bit versions, but only one key for both, so a change should work ok. However, I don't think I would upgrade a 32 bit to 64 bit, rather, do a clean install of 64 bit...much safer ;-)

Not just safer; as others mentioned you can't upgrade from 32 bit to 64bit. It needs to be installed from scratch.
If he uses Bill G's method, after he's done the clean installation he can then transfer his data back on to the new setup.

Thanks for all of the input I kind of figured it would not be simple(still well within my skill level) but a couple of other questions is there a 64 bit version of Boinc that I will need to install(which means draining my cache which I will have to do anyway when I do my upgrades) or will it update without my input. Also I was playing with WET and even when I chose more than the default options it was only showing about half the amount of space that windows shows as in use on the drive. Set SETI for No New Tasks, complete all work in queue. Find, and copy the BOINC Data Directory, (normally hidden; so change Windows to Show Hidden Folders/Files), put the BOINC Folder Copy onto a flash drive.

Once you've installed the 64-Bit OS; change Windows to Show Hidden Folders/Files, and put the BOINC Data Folder Copy back to where it should reside on the hard drive.

Then go to SETI@Home Home Page and Download BOINC, (should be 64-Bit at that point), and install it. 64-Bit BOINC will see the existing BOINC Data Folder, and use your existing ID's for the system Projects. OH, and you MUST name the computer the same name it has now!!! Name the computer BEFORE installing BOINC.

It will not be the same amount of space as it does not transfer the OS. It has no need to, it is only files and settings (programs actually usually need to be reinstalled, but all the settings and data associated with the programs is transferred).
All you BOINC/SETI data will be transferred and, as mentioned, you just need to install the 64 bit BOINC over what is there. All the files and setting will still be there.

Side note: I just had to do a scratch install of Win10 as cloning to my new SSD drive would not work. I did not keep the same name for the computer and BOINC just picked me up and transferred every thing to the new system. I just copied all my folders from the old HD to the new SSD drive after I had done the scratch install, and it worked just fine after re-installing BOINC.

Thanks for all the input I can do this without a problem but I think that it will have to wait a couple of weeks I have a vacation coming (not going anywhere but not having to get up at 4 or 5 am for a week is always nice) and hopefully I will have my new mobo,cpu and gpu by then and I can get it all done at one time.
