I have always wondered why Thumper is on the list, A maintenance computer? Back in August 2011, Thumper was "our file server, where we keep all the raw data among other things". Like all the boring glue that holds a data centre together, it doesn't get star billing unless things go wrong... |

Sorry for OT but why "server status" page is this computer: centurion: Intel Server (2 x hexa-core 3.4GHz Xeon, 512 GB RAM)? Okay. Good to know. |

Boom I'm back up + working. Time to catch other people unawares + pile on a few extra coals. Edit: spoke too soon - it was but a brief flurry. |

Help me to see the light. If a WU is listed as "Finished upload" in the BOINC Event Viewer, why is it also listed in the Task screen as "Progress 100%, Ready to report." Shouldn't it not appear in the Task screen? Also, why do some users have entries for requesting WUs (like JaundicedEye) while others (like me) have none? We both have v7.6.22 of BOINC. |

There are two stages in "reporting" a task, first is sending the data to the servers, this is normally done as soon as the task is completed. The second stage, the "report" stage takes place on the next scheduled contact, among other things this is a confirmation that you sent the data back and not somebody pretending to be to be you. Tasks are removed from your "in progress" list once both stages have been completed correctly. Frustrating? - It can be, but you get used to it.... Rob, thanx for the explanation, this is the first time in the "short" time I have been with project where I have heard why uploading also requires reporting. |

@Rob Smith Thanks. Its kinda sorta like double authentication. Now, for the latter question Also, why do some users have entries for requesting WUs (like JaundicedEye) while others (like me) have none? We both have v7.6.22 of BOINC. Is there a sensible explanation, or do we chalk this up to the funkiness of BOINC (ie 'undocumented feature')? |

It gets recycled to the top of the discussion heap periodically - not so often now that we're using modern, faster, servers and have a decent comms link. Here's one example from 2007 The significant point from that discussion is that it is efficient, in database terms, to upload the files one at a time (that's a simple transfer, no DB access required), but to save then up and do the database work - the reporting - in a batch. Rom Walton (BOINC Developer) got so annoyed at people like me discussing 'Report Results Immediately' (as the non-batched process is called) that he wrote a blog with some idea of the processes involved. I wonder if the client will get a <min_tasks_reported>#</min_tasks_reported> config to go along with <max_tasks_reported>#</max_tasks_reported>, or perhaps that would be more of a server side setting to reduce db load. Unofficially, as it's third-hand, today's outrage was caused by BOINC database replica server Carolyn crashing last night, possibly due to a RAID card issue. This was from the SETI Is Down Cafe which we flock to when we can't flock to here. :^) |

Yes, but even though I'm Reporting completed work; my RAC has dropped 1.5K in two days!!! :-( Everyone is trying to upload and report completed tasks, so I guess it's kind of busy now, besides Replica database is disabled, so we don't get validated results atm. My pending tasks has sky-rocketed... |

Yes it seems to be very busy ATM, uploads were very slow and painful, kinda reminded me of the days before the move to the colo. Seti was very exciting then. |

I am a little confused here. In the past when the tasks page for my computer was not indicating what I actually had for tasks, I thought the reason was that the replica database was “X†number of seconds behind the master data base and the information for the status page came from the replica. Now my computer’s task page seems current and the replica database on Carolyn appears to be down. Am I mistaken on the source of data for the status page or has there been a change of the source from Carolyn to Oscar? |
