+1, I find random things sometimes helpful in technical matters. "Living by the wisdom of computer science doesn't sound so bad after all. And unlike most advice, it's backed up by proofs." -- Algorithms to live by: The computer science of human decisions. |

With only 110 MB channels to be split either new disks will be mounted or we will soon run out of work. And it is a 3 day weekend too ... |

We've been stuck on 60 channels of MB to split for quite some time It's true. Always happens. Something to the tune of "you changed the outcome by checking it!" Linux laptop: record uptime: 1511d 20h 19m (ended due to the power brick giving-up) |

Something to the tune of "you changed the outcome by checking it!"Schrodinger's Kittie? You can call it that if you want. There seems to be pretty strong followings of kitties and racoons around here though, so.. pick which one you want to go with. That quote is actually a line from Futurama, when Professor Farnsworth contests the result of the centaur race because it was a photo finish and they used an electron microscope to determine who won, and the centaur he bet on was not the winner. Then he yelled that one out. Linux laptop: record uptime: 1511d 20h 19m (ended due to the power brick giving-up) |

Something to the tune of "you changed the outcome by checking it!" With how often processes can hang until new input comes in.... We become sysadmins by checking the Status Page? :-) |

The Lower the angle range, the more impact those settings have. I would suggest for display devices and a device like that, pfblockspersm of 15, and pfperiodsperlaunch of 200, might inmprove things. On non-display GPUs (or even the display one if you don;t experience notable slowdown) you could up the process priority. It's been almost a week and while I haven't been able to keep a close eye on things the results are in. With Jason's suggested parameters (pfblockspersm = 15, pfperiodsperlaunch = 200, processpriority = abovenormal), the non VLARs that run longer than they are estimated to are finishing considerably earlier. Estimated crunch times of 47 min are finishing in around 38.5, where as they were taking up to 55 min. Unfortunately the parameters are only good for my (mostly) dedicated cruncher. The screen lag isn't too bad (when it does occur). However when typing out something such as this post the result is (roughly) every 15th letter doesn't make it through so I've kept the defaults on my daily use system. Grant Darwin NT |

Two updates to mention, and then I won't have to mention anything about this for a while. The Addonics port multiplier arrived in Saturday's mail. Took about two minutes to install and that solved the problem. External drives are back up and operational. So that's 5x1TB single disks. Second thing.. I had a Compaq Presario out in the garage that I used to use for random hardware testing and so forth, and out of curiosity.. I pulled-up CPUID on it... it's a s939 Sempron 3500+. Looks like I'm cannibalizing that machine to get Altair back up and running...with an upgrade, because it's a 3500+ (2.0ghz) instead of a 3200+ (1.8Ghz). And... APs are flowing nicely. This has been a good Saturday for me. Linux laptop: record uptime: 1511d 20h 19m (ended due to the power brick giving-up) |

Yes, the kitties are enjoying the AP run as well. "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |

Neat. We're dusting-off some 2010 tapes, and getting some APs out of them, too! Linux laptop: record uptime: 1511d 20h 19m (ended due to the power brick giving-up) |

Neat. We're dusting-off some 2010 tapes, and getting some APs out of them, too! Perhaps Richard can give us a history on those tapes in the morning. My own database (which only goes back to 2013) shows that the 04my10aa tape was split in January, 2015, but only for APs (I got 4 of them). |

[E&OE - it was a quick re-hack of my usual query] Looks like we've been back to recheck things more than once. |

That 28au10ab tape is a curious one. I show both MBs and APs being split from it in October, 2014. I got 6 of each. Wonder why it's back again. |
