Message 1838349 - Posted: 28 Dec 2016, 21:48:49 UTC - in response to Message 1838347.

I called the animal shelter and asked them how much they wanted, they told me $190. I was thinking that's a lot when your trying to give these animals a home. I paid only $10 before.

I didn't want to buy the kennel just an animal. LOL

Grace cost Me $10.00, plus a tank of gas for the car(12 gallons) in 2010, I had to make 2 trips to the Apple Valley CA animal shelter, one to adopt, one to pickup since surgery was not needed, seems I got a retread who was left to wander on Her own for a while.

Now I suspect She has gone blind.

Like in Her box, I have to do somethings for Her, food in Her bowl, I have to put Her over the food before She'll eat, not following My hand like She used to.

If her eyes are cloudy, she could be suffering from cataracts. This is treatable through cataract removal. It is a simple procedure; my dad has had this done on both of his own eyes. I don't know what a vet would charge for Grace, though... I hope that cataracts are all that it is, I would hate to know that she's just up and gone blind...

God bless, Vic.

TL

There has to be a reason Vic. Please get Grace checked by a vet.
We all love her here, Vic.

I will, asap. Right now I just need to take two bags of trash out and find a place to repair a broken belt loop at.

Yes, a trip to the vet is in order.

Kitties are generally very habitual and predictable. When their habits change, something is up.

I have been through this. In two cases it was due to cancer taking over. And the kitties had to be monitored and dealt with before they were showing pain and suffering.
One was a case of kitty getting into some cleaning supplies, unknown to their caretaker. Kitty got to the vet in time, and they were able to save her.
In a couple it was just kitty gradually succumbing to the frailties of old age. And not all cats or breeds age at the same rate, although in all cases, much faster than a human being. A 12yo kitty is considered roughly 65 in human years.
In one case, the behavior was due to a simple urinary tract infection, which was reversed when she was cured of it.

At the moment, one of my own kitties, Bandit, seems to be sneezing a bit more often than usual. Not terribly so, but if it continues for a few more days, she will be due for her own vet visit.

In any case, only a professional vet exam can determine what it going on, so that the proper care for kitty can be chosen.

Cleaning supplies here are behind locked doors, I made sure of that, years ago.

Well, at least you can rule that out.

I'd be willing to chip in a little if Grant wanted to adopt an animal.

Anyone else?

Some adoption agencies do make it quite difficult, financially, to adopt. I understand they
have expenses, but sheesh!

(Grant, I really think a cat would be a great choice for you. Maybe a 'senior' cat.)

I keep thinking about signing up to make automatic, monthly donations to several charities. I keep
procrastinating because I can't afford to donate to all of them (animal and veteran charities, mostly).
So I've come up with a sort of solution. I'm going to choose one charity a month and donate to that
one. Once I've won the lottery I'll give them some of that money. ;-)

Just thought I'd share in case someone else is having the same thoughts.

Edit: By the way, DUH! Right?

I might, especially if it were a special kitty.
If I am not mistaken, our local shelter here gives away kitties over 3yo for free to qualified adopters....
And you do have to fill out an application form and undergo some vetting, no animals are given away like candy.....they are a very responsible organization.
There is, I think, a hundred or so dollar fee for the young 'uns.
Dunno about the doggins.

I donate when and where I am financially able to.
Some times it's just $50.00, sometimes I can afford to haul over a couple of hundred bucks worth of kitty food.
And no matter what, it's a hell of a good feeling when I can.
All I know is that all of them are as innocent as a baby. None of them ended up in a shelter due to their own fault. And I love and feel sorry for each and every one of them.

We have always taken in older cats from those that couldn't care for them any more, to strays that simply adopted us. Never bought one in my life. Most lasted 6-7 years at most, sometimes we had 2 at a time. They all had to be put to sleep in time though cancer or simple old age. We have been here 33 years and there are 7 buried in the back garden. Our current adopted cat is 11, in 5 years or so we will be there yet again. Dunno how much longer I can do this. No point getting a kitten, at my age it will see me out, and I won't be there to guarantee its welfare.

Just make preparations for such an event.
I have.
If Lori precedes me, I shall see to her's. And vice versa.
No cat left behind.

I have changed my signature from a friendly raccoon to a ferocious raccoon because my team, the mighty Raccoon Lovers, is currently participating in the GPUUG challenge "Heat Your Home".

Go Team Raccoon Lovers!!!

@Grant, like the others, I recommend a kitty.
First of, contact the shelter and asked if they plan a free adoption event. A lot of shelters do this across the US.

Secondly contact the Vet that took care of your GF's dog and let them know you looking for a pet. Sure it will cost you some, examination and vaccinations, but should be alot cheaper than the adoption fee.

Please keep us posted.

We have a few cats outside that must have been left behind
from people moving out which are all wild now.
They hang around here but keep their distance from you.
You never see mice or rats around here ever.

They had a free week before I started thinking about a pet,
Of course I didn't know about it then.
I still haven't made up my mind yet.
