Message 1792655 - Posted: 1 Jun 2016, 18:47:40 UTC - in response to Message 1792641.

I hated to do it, but I had to take down my bird feeders, and stop feeding raccoons and other animals. A bear and her cubs just climbed up our neighbors deck, and stole one of his feeders. The last time, a couple of years ago a bear decided to visit, he made a problem in the neighborhood, and ended up in the neighbors freezer. Since I don't want that to happen to mother or cubs, I took down the feeders, and stopped putting out food. :(

A couple of blocks from me, so yes, don't feed the bears.

Saw a pair of odocoileus hemionus fuliginatus walking bold as day down the sidewalk nibbling on some rosebush. A buck and a doe. Don't think that hunting in city limits is well received and didn't have a camera as I was headed to a restaurant and you can't use your cell phone while driving. Perhaps that explains the black bear issues in the area. Haven't seen reports of mountain lion yet, but if there are deer ...

All of this may be related to the Station Fire a few years ago and the recovery of the National Forest.

I can also assert with 100% certainty that they enjoy daylily buds.

If I get any daylily flowers in my front yard, it is only because they have accidentally missed a bud here and there because they were so distracted by other tasty edibles in my garden.

In response to Chris' treatise on Beer in the UK.

On my way back from fleeing out of Iran in 1978 I spent an evening in London courtesy of British Airways since we missed connecting flights to the States. The reason being that fuel was not available in Iran due to the strikes associated with the revolution there. Having to stop in Kuwait for fuel made us late getting back to London.

Anyhow, considering myself to be a smug and knowledgeable fellow, I went out at night to a local Pub and ordered "a proper pint of Bitter" The publican looked at me like I was crazy. Apparently no such thing existed. I settled on a pint of "E" I think it was. I was disappointed that it was not served warm as I had been led to believe that was the way that Brits drank their beer.

We have three neighbor-kittens hanging around our backyard these days (Penguin, Joker and The Riddler). I'll admit, I've grown attached. I provided them with some cat toys recently, which they seem to enjoy. Last night Snowball, our blond raccoon, was playing with a cat toy. Snowball is fully grown. I have seen raccoon kits play with toys before, but never an adult raccoon. Who knew???!!!

This is an interesting coincidence. Just a few hours ago I was wondering whether
raccoons play. Now I know they do.

I have a bad raccoon living in my attic now. I noticed a hole in the wooden
structure that surrounds my fireplace chimney and suspected a raccoon. Then
I saw a raccoon climbing up the ladder I have in my back yard. I ran to the
front of the house to see him climbing into the hole. I guess I'll have to
hire an "exterminator," or maybe I can trap him myself and hand him over to
Animal Control people, who will take him out into the wilderness and release
him.

Why all this obsession with Raccoons? (Besides the obvious reasons :D and the fact that a famous BOINC team is named Raccoon Lovers)

Why not goats, donkeys foxes or so many other sexier (to me at least ^_^ ) animals out there?

Here, another species underrepresented on these forums:

aka Reynard the fox.

There are some Foxy Ladies around here in this thread:)

Now here we have this song "Räven raskar över isen" that is an old Swedish folksong performed as a singing game when dancing around the Christmas tree and the midsummer pole. The opening verses are often "flickornas visa" (the "girls' song", where the participants curtsey) or "pojkarnas visa" (the "boys' song", where the participants bow). After that, the verses may vary.

LSM and I saw a pelican over the river when we were coming back from
Edmonton the other day. There are a lot more hunting birds around this
year. I saw a cardinal a couple of years back, and I was hoping it was
warm enough this year for a repeat showing. It is even better than that,
the cycle won't be complete for another two years so there is lots better
to come in animal numbers alone.

The only thing I see more of lately here is......bunny rabbits.
Must have been a really mild winter for them, for they are here in abundance this year.

Also, squirrels. Lots and lots of little squirrels.

We have had steadily increasing numbers of cardinals in the yard over the last few years. There are at least two nesting pairs this year, and their offspring are starting to show up at the feeders. I read somewhere that the average cardinal never travels more than a few kilometres from where it was born, so it make take some time for them to penetrate into central Alberta.
