Kudos: To the S@H crew for having plenty of WUs for my computer to nosh on whilst I sleep Gripes: None... yet. |

Kudos: Every user who is patiently waiting for the v8 GPU apps to arrive. Gripe: the idiot(s) trying to run v7 as v8. A person who won't read has no advantage over one who can't read. (Mark Twain) |

"Kudos: Every user who is patiently waiting for the v8 GPU apps to arrive." does "patiently" include those of us who are mumbling under our breaths as they watch their average count go down daily?... my shiny new 980Ti's are chomping at the bit to take off and run again... ;) |

Kudos: to SETI for creating BOINC. Gripes: I feel the initial replication of 3 wastes valuable computations & energy. I'm sure this has been discussed before, yet I imagine a solution to be relatively easy: introduce WUs of 2 or 3 size tiers, like GPU-Grid or Collatz are doing it (bundle more streams into larger ones). Assign WUs to hosts based on their average crunching time per WU. Use this to reduce the overall number of WUs in flight (fast hosts get fewer longer WUs) to ease the load on the DB. Afterwards the DB should be able to handle an initial replication of 2, which will keep some WUs in flight for longer (whereas others can be purged quicker, because the server doesn't have to wait for the 3rd result). You are wrong on the initial replication - it is TWO. The only time one has to wait for a third (or greater) result is when something goes wrong with one of the first two tasks. The reason for all work units of a given type being the same size is so that they can readily be run by just about any system. For the projects you list this is not the case, and is indeed intended not to be the case. Bob Smith Member of Seti PIPPS (Pluto is a Planet Protest Society) Somewhere in the (un)known Universe? |

The more assistance we provide, the faster and better the v8 apps can be released. Of course, there are also plenty of other BOINC projects with GPU apps to keep us busy in the interim. The most popular secondary project around here is Einstein@Home, as it is both astrophysical and uses Arecibo data. Certainly a better use of one's time than mumbling. :^) |

@Rob: oh my, you're right! I feel stupid for posting this, yet feel better now that my gripe is relieved. I had returned to SETI a few months ago and seen "initial replication = 3" in a few WUs like this one. However, I didn't notice that the 3rd task was only sent our after the first and second ones had delivered conflicting results. The reason for all work units of a given type being the same size is so that they can readily be run by just about any system. For the projects you list this is not the case, and is indeed intended not to be the case. It's a trade-off: the other projects could also size their WUs according to the weakest CPU expected to contribute, but then they'd need to generate so many of them that they'd probably overload their database server. Instead they add complexity to their server software. The end result is the same: they can deliver work to a wide range of hardware. MrS Scanning for our furry friends since Jan 2002 |

Perhaps time to remind people of the rules This thread is for Gripes and Kudos. If you need to discuss things please use another thread. Thank you. |

Gripe - folks who use the Q&A and Number Crunching sections as help desks for their gaming and other non-SETI computing activities. Gripe............ Folks with shallow understanding that do not understand the many are not the forum pros that those who come here every day are. Kudos........... For those who DO have the understanding, and give kind answers instead of slights for those who need them. Be a meower... "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |

Gripes: The lower credit given to v8 tasks as opposed to v7. Even though I'm here for the science and not a credit hound per se, it would be nice to see the appropriate credit given for the work being done. It's still dishearten to see my machine go from the top 100 list (50 was highest) to 228 on the top computer list. Even with the lower credit -- We need more AP tasks!!!! I don't buy computers, I build them!! |
