It really has a 39 meters mirror. Incidentally, when Italy was not yet part of the European Southern Observatory I published on the Mondadori Science and Technology Yearbook 1978 an article by Adriaan Blaauw on ESO. I wonder if this had any part in the decision of Italian astronomers to join ESO.
