Finally! What we non-Americans have been saying for sometime, now an American is saying the exact same:
This situation reflects a failure of our government. It must be corrected to ensure the safety of those guaranteed the rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

The gun people don't care, their right to be able to kill at will is more important to them.

Probably. Is it true what the article stated that an 18 year old can purchase an AR-15 but not a handgun until they're 21?

Message 1926155 - Posted: 24 Mar 2018, 0:52:24 UTC - in response to Message 1926143.

Does anybody disagree with what these Parkland students propose.
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/commentisfree/2018/mar/23/parkland-students-manifesto-americas-gun-laws?utm_source=esp&utm_medium=Email&utm_campaign=GU+Today+USA+-+Collections+2017&utm_term=268684&subid=15256890&CMP=GT_US_collection

If so why?

Yes, frankly a lot of what they propose violates the Constitution. However if everywhere they wrote "BAN" was changed to "Purchase a Tax Stamp" we might have a starting point.
There is no loophole for gun shows except in the minds of people who don't know the present totality of regulations. As to crook A selling to crook B that will happen no matter what law is passed.
Keep the CDC out of it, they need to focus on other issues first.
Money for school safety is a joke. Do we turn schools into prisons with razor wire and guard towers?
The rest is quite sensible.

"Ban semi-automatic weapons that fire high-velocity rounds" - Excellent. But neither confiscation nor banning will happen.

Couldn't a law that bans semi-automatic weapons that fire high-velocity rounds also ban fire high-velocity rounds? Which would effectively make semi-automatic weapons that fire high-velocity rounds obsolete.

"Allow the CDC to make recommendations for gun reform" - Just a failed attempt to circumvent the Constitution.

Recommendations should be just that, there should not be an assumption that recommendations are going to passed into law.
I haven't looked but I would be surprised if 50% of recommendations by government committees, departments etc. are even discussed by lawmakers, never mind passed.

One should also bear in mind that there are 25 million students that will be able to vote by 2024 or sooner, some will even be able to vote this year. While at the other end of the age range about 20 million will be pushing up daisy's by 2024. Even at the moment gun ownership is about 1 in 3 for over 50's but only 1 in 4 below 50 and probably going to decrease more as it is also even lower for under 30's.

I've never tried to buy a gun, so if I did go in a gun shop, what should I expect to be asked, and what sort of gun could I get, and how quickly? I'm a lifelong Kentucky resident, and have no criminal record.
The mind is a weird and mysterious place

How many people including military actually fire over 300 meters regularly.
In my military service I could probably count the number of times on one hand.
I got most satisfaction on the 50 meter range when doing biathlon, than in anything else I did. I had to shoot well, as a Brit my skiing wasn't as fast as those from countries who skied from birth with guaranteed snow every winter.

Is suicidal regarding the protection of many present day freedoms.
Why? Didn't they have the freedom to attend school & return home alive? What happened to THAT right?

Nothing happened to that right. When someone is deprived of their rights without legal justification, that is called a crime. When someone is deprived of their right to life without legal justification (such as self-defense), that is the crime of (depending on circumstances) murder, manslaughter, etc.

In the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School case in Florida on Feb. 14th, 2018, the shooter was (surprisingly) captured alive, arrested, and indicted. Cruz, the shooter, has, through his lawyer, indicated that he is willing to plead guilty to all 34 charges, and agrees to 34 consecutive life sentences without possibility of parole. One presumes that Cruz wishes to avoid the needle or 'Old Sparky'. I am inclined to agree with this plea bargain. While I support the death penalty in cases such as this, the perp's age (19) leads me to suspect that the rest of his life in prison with no possibility of being released just might be the more just punishment.

It is ALREADY against the law for almost everyone (except police officers, etc.) to have a gun at a school. The perp broke that law.
It ALREADY is against the law for convicted felons, and the dangerously insane to buy/own/possess a gun. This law failed in this case for a number of reasons. Some of the reasons (Government mandated privacy for medical records INCLUDING mental is one). These reasons need to be fixed.
I might be in favor of placing bump stocks and HIGH capacity (> 20 rounds) detatchable magazines on the NFA/FOPA lists of restricted weapons. Not outright banned, but getting the permit to own one is rather difficult to get (includes a rigorous background check by the BATF, for instance).

No need to deprive everyone of their liberties... Just punish the ever living HADES out of the perps. And likely some way to easily force the crazies to take their meds if those meds allow them to be nice productive members of society.

Don't blame me, I voted for Johnson(L) in 2016.

@MK
Sometimes I think you go a little bit too far of saying this is the law and not facing reality.
If they do give Cruz 34 consecutive life sentences without possibility of parole do you really think it is going to stop anybody else who is mentally impaired that has access to firearms from committing a similar offense. Most papers I've would suggest not, but you do have to read them beyond the headlines. Tougher sentences probably do deter crimes like burglary but not for serious crimes like the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School case.

Since the DA seems hell bent on extracting capital punishment, watch the perp's lawyer say he was insane and the jury agree.

WK is right. If someone is considering murder they aren't thinking of the legal consequences, which just might make them insane under the law as they aren't considering right/wrong.

Unless you want to turn society into ISIL and have public executions to terrify the populace into submission, the only thing gained by capital punishment is vengeance.

As to life no parole, frankly society is far too soft once that has been decided. Like Capital there should be an automatic appeal. Once the appeal is over, put the scum in the cage where he will die and weld it shut. No lock. Just food and water in and waste out. His last duty to society is to die as quickly as he can.

Oh as to capital and life no parole cases, defendant should have 3 lawyers at least one of whom has prior capital case experience and he should get 4th lawyer for the appeal one of who have capital appellate experience.

Society did that effectively with Rudolph Hess in Spandau. But many thought it was inhumane and campaigned for his release.
Yes. Made a lot of Nazi's go into hiding.
Prison sentences serve three purposes

1. Punishment for transgressing societies laws
2. A deterrent not to offend again
3. A deterrent to others not to offend a first time.

1 doesn't work, because criminals believe they will get away with it. Much better that rot in a cell punishment is rehabilitation, where they must learn how to be a productive member of society when released. Obviously when you give someone no parole they aren't going to be released so there is no print in rehabilitation.
2 few to none actually know of the punishment so how can it deter?
3 they don't think they will get caught

Pennsylvania school district arms teachers with rocks in case of shooter.

A rural school district in Pennsylvania is arming teachers and students with buckets of rocks as a last resort should an armed intruder burst in, the superintendent said Friday.

Every classroom in the district about 90 miles northwest of Philadelphia has a 5-gallon bucket of river stones, said Blue Mountain School District Superintendent David Helsel.

"We always strive to find new ways to keep our students safe," Helsel told The Associated Press in a telephone interview, adding that the rocks are one small part of the district's overall security plan.

Throwing rocks is more effective than just crawling under desks and waiting, and it gives students and teachers a chance to defend themselves, he said. The district has about 2,700 students at three elementary schools, a middle school and a high school.
Now there you go. ;-)

Well them I think people like you would be happier living in the Middle East or back in Biblical times. Eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth, chop thieves hands off, publicly stone women to death for adultery etc. What a double life you do lead for an adherent of the Great Architect.
"I swear to tell the truth, the whole truth & nothing but the truth so help me god" with one hand on a bible & the other raised.

For a "civilised" society to use a book of fables to swear an oath in a court of law....

These days that is a good question. IMHO

It would seem the lobby with the most money and influence. har... ;-)

There is a growing number of folks, self included, that would like to see this change.

But I don't see politicians killing their cash cow anytime soon. har... How else could they amass million$ on a $100K a year salary and life time benifits.

The best I can do is be an informed voter and vote.

For me the Second Amendment is a deterrent for our government going rouge on my people. I saw it first hand in SE Asia in the 60s. The examples abound...

I see the White House has said what I've been saying:
On Saturday afternoon, the White House released a statement praising the "many courageous young Americans exercising their First Amendment rights today".
I see many here stating that under the "Bill of Rights" the 2nd is dominant in their arguments. Unfortunately in those arguments they forget one important point:
WHAT about the other 9?

"Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness" is a well-known phrase in the United States Declaration of Independence. The phrase gives three examples of the "unalienable rights" which the Declaration says have been given to all human beings by their Creator, and which governments are created to protect.

There is no example of any Amendment removing any Individual Right in the 'Bill of Rights'.

It was tried with the 18th.
