Is that really the choice? It's either protect an individual's freedom to own a semi-automatic rifle OR all hail big brother? There aren't any other possibilities?

Bobby a Assault rifle is not needed for personal safety a hand gun is possibly something or at least there is a fair argument to allow them but a Assault rifle.

Using the Big Bro argument is totally stupid as well . If your really worried about that then why do you have a Facebook account or a LinkedIn account as both of those are Big Bro and you don't have control of any info you post in them .

Your government does not have to spy on you as that will be against your constitution so guess what they do .

They ask our government to do it for them Via places like Pine Gap .Why do you think they keep Pine Gap going if not to spy on you lot Via a back door

Need is a personal choice. You chose to need gravity, air, water, food, shelter

Sometimes Gary you can say some very silly things .

Nothing silly at all. Different people ascribe different things to the "need" or "want" list. There is no uniform list. Requirement to live, but that is a different list!

Unbelievable, for the nth time: US Senate rejects terror list gun sale restrictions.

Should that nation be taken into custody by some competent body like the UN?

You know? Since you and many others here refuse to display what country you are from, I can only assume that you are NOT from MY country. So, on that note...

Why are you so all-fired concerned about what MY government does or does not do concerning MY country?

I have not read what you linked to, but I agree that, by your link text, the US Senate made a dumb-a$$ decision. I will read it later. But, I still fail to see how this would in any way be of any concern to you personally. Unless, it is just your way of continuing the BASHING of MY country. Am I bashing any country not my own? I don't think so, at least not intentionally.

So, I would ask that you stick to the issues of your country and let us stick to the issues of ours. Thank you.

I fail to understand why a forum topic of "politics" would even have any place on a SCIENCE website forum.

Peace!

This is also unbelivable!
In order to buy a handgun in Florida it is a mandatory waiting period of three days. However, that waiting period does not apply to guns that you need two hands to hold, like the Sig Sauer MCX!

WOW!!! Looky what I found!

GUN LAWS IN SWEDEN
Guns are capable of harmful and fatal consequences; and gun laws are quite stringent in Sweden. To be a gun owner requires a license, and this is tightly controlled by regulations. A potential gun owner needs to meet requirements to be granted a license. Various forms of self-defence weapons or deadly weapons such as pepper-spray to full-automatic machine guns are technically legal. However, most licenses for gun ownership are for hunters, as wild life hunting is highly in vogue in this country.

You got some nerve chastising MY country for semi-autos while full autos are allowed to be owned in your country. Shame on you!

Peace!

Good for them. Even the NRA didn't oppose keeping guns out of terrorists hands. But after the one party disrespected the victims and shouted down the moment of silence, what other result is possible?

I have not chastising your country, at very least I dont think I have.
Last post was about the weapon laws in Florida.
Most US states hasn't the same laws.
Both Sweden and the US has lot of guns per capita and actually almost the same gun laws.
Isn't that weird.

Yes. Full autos can be owned by collectors. There are not that many.
We can own heavier gun than that.
In Nacka, suburb of Stockholm, there was a guy who had a howitzer on his garden:)
From you article.
Besides hunting, another common reason for gun ownership in Sweden is collecting. The gun collector must have a clearly stated interest and may begin another collection if he or she has collected for several years and has shown a great interest in gun history. A collection of guns that can be of criminal interest, such as pistols or submachine guns, will lead the police to insist on a very high safety level on the storing of such guns (including security windows and vault doors). Gun ownership may also be granted for reasons of sentimental value or as decoration. It is considered a privilege, rather than a right, to own a firearm in Sweden.

The difference between the US and Sweden is it considered a privilege, rather than a right, to own a firearm in Sweden.

Various forms of self-defence weapons or deadly weapons such as pepper-spray to full-automatic machine guns are technically legal.

The article doesn't say what technically legal means.
My brother was convicted of illegal weapon possession once when driving a cab at night having pepperspray as a protection...

In this country this is what humanity looks like. It's a called "due process of law". No 'Black Lists' without "due process of law".

--

due proc·ess

noun: due process of law

Fair treatment through the normal judicial system, especially as a citizen's entitlement.

I have tried to clean up the thread a little.

Please remember, your countries laws and standards are not everyone's. Just because someone lives in a country that has different laws and they defend them does not make them sub human.

Constructive discussion does not involve insulting other posters or their beliefs or their country on either side of an argument.

Please can we continue with a discussion, not name calling.
Thank you.

Interesting, Hillary likes a machine gun ...
http://nypost.com/2016/06/18/monica-lewinsky-ironically-freaked-out-that-bill-cheated-on-her/
She also knew how to handle a gun. Byrne found Hillary Clinton took a “surprising liking to firearms, especially a Thompson submachine gun, an original and an American classic, Al Capone’s legendary ‘Chicago typewriter.’”

Very silly and local people continue to die.

Many many years have passed since the American civil war. Really, is there any need for old out of date needs for a militia?

Reword that today as 'vigilanties'...? And worse as we continue to witness?...

So... Why has Obama been out-voted to save America from their own guns?

Things would have to get really bad for me to consider buying a gun for protection. That said, I don't think a law anywhere really matters in the grand scheme of things because just about anybody in the world can get a simple gun, and I don't think that's a good thing, but it's like I said a few posts back, there's too many guns already out there, and just like nuclear weapons, we're not going to get rid of them anytime soon.

In this day and age, do we really need guns at all? If suddenly all guns disappeared would it be a bad thing?

We are a Country that believes in the Foundation of Law. Where elections must have very limited consequences, regarding Individual Freedom.

Not 51% telling 49% what their Individual Freedoms are. Nor 90% telling 10% what their Individual Freedoms are.

Our Constitution, is neither old nor obsolete. Humans have died over thousands of years for these Individual Freedoms. Unless now, one wishes to pick-and-choose which Individual Freedoms are Obsolete. Speech? Assembly? Press? Self Defense?

The USA is a true United Nation of All Peoples on this Small Planet. Many who have fled countries that believed Individual Freedoms are transient, and subject to the whims of a majority of its people, or a Ruling Class.

Yes... ONLY IN AMERICA.

Yes, Clyde.

A tyranny imposed by a majority is just as evil and distasteful as a tyranny imposed by a minority, a point that many here seem to have forgotten.

Individual Freedom and Liberty MUST be placed above ALL else... Otherwise, there is tyranny (or to use another phrase used before around here... Big Brother). It really IS a binary choice. I just wish that more people realized it.

While I do not agree with EVERYTHING you say, I do agree with most of it, including everything you just posted.

Individual Freedom and Liberty MUST be placed above ALL else..

So what if one person, while exercising their "Individual Freedom and Liberty", impacts your's? What do you do?

Otherwise, there is tyranny (or to use another phrase used before around here... Big Brother).

You mean order don't you?

Now that has got to be the most selfish, self centered, self serving load cow manure of an excuse that I keep on hearing from those who obviously don't have any respect for anyone else but themselves. It certainly shows us those few here who have absolutely no idea of the concept of a peaceful humanity and that is very sad indeed.

No cheers here.

This trype is just that .

Everyone outside does have a say .

You wish to be the policemen of the world

You interfere with other country's Gun Laws and then expect us to say nothing

Well I for one wont .

The dead have not even been laid to rest and you reject BACKGROUND CHECKS

This guys was on the FBI terror list and why where there no alarm bells going off and this guy put under surveillance

Because you won't have proper BACKGROUND CHECKS

So it now official the NRA don't give a jack about the USA otherwise in a time of WAR the BACKGROUND CHECKS should be the very least you need to do to stop another TERRORIST from buying guns and going on a murderous kill spree

You Americans are truly a dumb lot .

Or is it that because they where a load of lezzo's and FAGs who gives a F right ! The true underbelly of America all nice on talkback shows or Oprah but like Hollywood all Crap too

Sunset? HA!!! the fill in the blank would never agree to that!!!

Glenn what you see is the result of a two party winner take all system. There can never be compromise on any contentious issue. If there was it would show weakness, which can't happen. To the victor go the spoils, er bribes.

BTW the NRA is for preventing terrorists from being able to buy guns. So the opposition is not from them!

The opposition is from the anti-big brother segment. You see these lists of no buy have no method of challenge. Anyone and everyone can be put on the list and there is no review of why they are on the list. People here don't like that. They believe they should have due process and have the ability to present a defense to scurrilous accusations, along with a bright line standard which is not secret. Edward Snowden comes to mind.

Perhaps you all trust your government to be perfect. We Americans know better. Just how many unarmed children do the cops kill in America, the same cops who will put together the list. Perhaps you can understand now.

So you say SUNSET. We say fix the damn lists first. As you see the big brother won't fix the list even in the face of selling terrorists guns to kill Americans. They lust after power that much. Now understand why Americans won't give up their Second Amendment right.

Gary you don't need to give it up . It's about interpreting what it means .

This guy was on the FBI list not once but twice .

This should have set of Alarm bells .

Your security forces need to be able to take action if the police are not aware of what is going on then you don't have security at all your system is going to used against you now to commit more of this type of thing.

I suspect it got more to do with it being GAY passive Hate from your legislators .

Not all agree with Same Sex marriage ... right !! .. So just dismiss this case as Gods Judgement there all sinners .....Blah blah blah

Can someone explain why the Law was not changed ??

The US gun laws changes all the time.
For some reason every state has it's own law.
Wouldn't it better if gun laws where federal?
And enforce the law of course.

Even the Second Amendment has changed but it was a long time ago.
The history of the Second Amendment.
http://sputniknews.com/radio_thom_hartmann_show/20160621/1041665718/second-amendment-gun-violence.html
The article is written by Thom Hartmann, an American radio host, author, former psychotherapist, entrepreneur, and progressive political commentator.
He is also an Op-Ed contributor to Russian Sputnik but I'm certain he got the history part right:)
