Someone needs to get a couple AC units to Jason...

Lol, true. It's been 41 Celcius in the shade (hopefully cooler today though), house AC not keeping up, and sweatboxing with all three dev machines isn't fun, ROFL.

Cuda patch (for generic stock code) should be committed tonight (all going well).

As for the optimisations to go in after that, well found a good plugin architecture to work towards that'll make the future a lot easier.

Soon enough we'll have to put in some default throttles and advanced user switches with big warnings, or ship builds with fire extinguishers. More than speed to think about for the time being.

Make sure that your SETI@home preferences has "SETI@home v8" set to yes seeing as you're using stock apps.

Cheers.

Message 1753500 - Posted: 3 Jan 2016, 7:41:17 UTC - in response to Message 1753245.

I can't seem to capture anything from my slot, MB they are just gone too fast.

I keep seeing this message.

2016-01-02 10:44:18 AM | SETI@home | [task] task_state=EXECUTING for 09se11af.5180.2043140.13.40.60_1 from start
2016-01-02 10:44:18 AM | SETI@home | [cpu_sched] Restarting task 09se11af.5180.2043140.13.40.60_1 using setiathome_v8 version 800 in slot 4

40 seconds later it restarts.

I can kill the task, but just trying to help debug v8 the best I can.

An update for all those that tried to help me,
The first task I ran experienced these problems, the second one validated.
I'm running 2 v8 tasks now and they seem fine so far.

The only thing I can think of, I suspended an active task to start my first v8 task, maybe the stot was not emptied properly ... no one will ever know.

You might want a more recent BOINC version (than 7.4) to get the fixes for emptying out the slot directories. The current release version is 7.6.22.

Your computers are hidden, It would be useful if you gave some more information, like Boinc version, OS, etc, or at least a Host ID number.

Marco is running v8 under Anonymous Platform, so at a guess he's using my manual installation segment.

At a hunch, could you try a small amendment, please? It just involves adding one line:

<api_version>7.7.0</api_version>

so the minimal version becomes

<app_info>
    <app>
        <name>setiathome_v8</name>
    </app>
    <file_info>
        <name>setiathome_8.00_windows_intelx86.exe</name>
        <executable/>
    </file_info>
    <file_info>
        <name>libfftw3f-3-3-4_x86.dll</name>
        <executable/>
    </file_info>
    <app_version>
        <app_name>setiathome_v8</app_name>
        <version_num>800</version_num>
        <api_version>7.7.0</api_version>
        <file_ref>
            <file_name>setiathome_8.00_windows_intelx86.exe</file_name>
            <main_program/>
        </file_ref>
        <file_ref>
            <file_name>libfftw3f-3-3-4_x86.dll</file_name>
        </file_ref>
    </app_version>
</app_info>

If using the graphics-enabled version, it goes in the same place: between the version number and the first file reference.

(And please let us know whether you used the minimal or 'with graphics' version. Likewise, if anyone else is experiencing "exited with zero status but no 'finished' file" right from the very start, with nothing written to std_err, please try this change, and let us know whether it helps, with or without graphics.)

Restarted BOINC and detaching/attaching to Seti@home without any changes.
FFTW seems to not advance in .wisdom file creation.

Minimal version (i.e no graphics).
Another host Q9450 with same operating system advance normally.

Unless you installed the previous science application through the anonymous platform -highly unlikely on an Android device- the Seti applications will update automatically.

Cause Mateusz SETI MultiBeam v7 app faster than stock, compatible with more types of Android devices and comes with NativeBOINC that still more convenient than stock... I would say it's quite likely thing - Anonymous platform under Android.

Not if the person just installed BOINC from the Google Play Store, be it Berkeley BOINC or NativeBOINC. In both you'll have to add the project in the normal way through the GUI, the project then sends you the applications. Which is what we were talking about here.

But just for the sake of arguing, have you ever tried getting into the Seti@Home directory on an Android device? It's not easy. You have to root the device, and just to navigate to the Seti directory (at data\data\edu.berkeley.boinc\projects\edu.berkeley.setiathome\) you already need an app, like X-Plore. Without a rooted device you can't even get to the directory. It's hidden.

So in all, not something that a general Joe will be able to do, and therefore highly unlikely that Dave has done so.

Honestly I did not download NativeBOINC from Play, I downloaded it from Mateusz web site. And that version defaults to his app and anonymous platform in auto mode. That is, no user action required to get anonymous platform configured and best optimized app for Android to work. Device shouldn't be rooted for that. Is Play version different?

Also, NativeBOINC has nice ability to dump files to SD card. Not enough to manual anonymous platform configuration but enough to look how it configured and other things that need read from BOINC's data directory w/o writing.

NativeBOINC is really cool thing, even for non-rooted devices.

And yes, I have full access to SETI project directory on 3 similar tablets cause they all rooted. And one non-rooted phone where I can look into (via NativeBOINC ability to dump to SD card). As another good feature NativeBOINC allows to put data directory on external SD card. In such config data can be analysed even on non-rooted devices (even changed perhaps).

So uh, no OpenCL CPU applications? ;-)

GPU or CPU ?

I typed it correctly the first time around, CPU, central processing unit.
I keep on waiting for a project to try and make an OpenCL CPU application that can make use of all cores of the CPU to run the work. A multi-threading application, but instead of the old mt, done in OpenCL. Very possible that the CPU applications here don't lend themselves to be capable of running the work on multiple cores at the same time.

It's possible to recompile current OpenCL app into CPU app. It's just not very useful. Resulting app will have quite poor performance and overall host performance will suffer. Current highly-optimized CPU apps have low enough memory footprint to be launched even with many-cores hosts (32+).

No, I got there the opt app without doing anything special.

Thanks Mike, for the example. Added to app_info.xml, copied all files out of the 7zip in the Seti folder, started BOINC.

Got errors about referenced executable not being present.
Double checked everything i did, then found I'd copied everything to the folder on my M: drive, while BOINC uses things on C:

I had copied everything to the wrong Seti folder (my backup one, {forehead slap} d'oh), exited BOINC, copied everything over to the real Seti folder, started BOINC.

No errors. :)

The app_info.xml used now, for my AMD HD7870 with all version 7 science apps by Lunatics (sorry for the long scroll everyone, if answering please don't quote!):

Hi.

Both my Macs received the new v8.0 apps this morning.

All the tasks on the PowerPC machine are erroring immediately.

The tasks appear to be running OK on the Intel machine, but it's too early to say anything about validation.
