Message 1975135 - Posted: 14 Jan 2019, 6:16:22 UTC - in response to Message 1975129.

Wichita Falls (Texas) police received a rather unique call Friday morning involving a woman drinking wine in a Walmart parking lot.

Don't know about the US, but here in Australia while parking lots are the property of the company that owns them, people are still subject to the local road rules while driving vehicles in them. So they can be done for DUI (Driving Under the Influence), defective vehicles etc while in the parking lot.

DUI's exist here too, but that's 50 types at the very least, plus there is public intoxication, texting while driving, others would know more on this than I do.

Parking lots are private here also, but are accessible by the public and police do come and drive thru, sometimes when called or on their own. Walmart has it's own Security, though they will call the cops if needed.

...is this a test marketing of a new variety of Pringles???

If not I would have thought the salt and other flavourings left on the inside of the can would spoil the taste of the wine. Also, surely the "can" would get rather soggy when containing fluid of any sort.....

There have been cases of DUI while on horseback - no the horse wasn't drunk. Of course they can always charge drunk in public.

Sheriff injured in police chase — his son was driving the stolen car, Oklahoma cops say

An Oklahoma sheriff is recovering from injuries he sustained during a Christmas Eve police chase — and deputies now say his son is the culprit.

Travis Simpson, 40, remained in the Cotton County Jail Monday after turning himself in Thursday night, according to jail records. He’s charged with endangering others while eluding, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and driving with a suspended or revoked license.

At his age he should just stick with driving around the estate these days and leave the public roads to chauffeurs.

Cheers.

I'm getting really tired of people speeding. It happens just about any time, any day of the week, with the minor exception of Sunday morning. And I'm not talking about on the highway/expressways. It's on the regular city streets, and it's ridiculous. The speed limit in my neighborhood is 25 mph, but quite a few people just zoom down the streets with no regard for others(or wildlife, for that matter). It's especially bad at night. My street is normally a quiet one, and there is very little traffic other than the residents, but it's common to hear somebody zooming down the street at what sounds like double the speed limit in the middle of the night.

Stop signs in the neighborhood are also poorly observed by many people. I see people roll through them, steal a turn at a 4-way stop, or if they're behind me, and I take a full stop, they nearly run into me, or get irritated, and go around me at the first opportunity they see.

Throughout town, road rage seems rampant. I recently saw a van and a car nearly sideswipe each other, and then one of them chased after the other to get to the red light. Really? Is it that important to get to your destination a minute or two before the other guy? The police are understaffed and too busy fighting other crimes to monitor traffic, nowadays. It's like the wild west out there!

I think I'll just stay home and post on SETI. ;~)

You forgot to add than many of these people are the ones sitting at the traffic lights, and are still sitting there after the lights go green until someone honks their horn because they're too busy playing with their phone to notice that the lights have changed.

Or, as a letter writer in today's New Scientist suggests, get an autonomous car.

I'm sure some enterprising developer will be glad to sponsor a 'By appointment to...' badge on the side of their self-driving offering. Perhaps even Land Rover needs a new crash-test dummy?

The following is the main issue why Safety within the Transportation profession will always be debatable:
Speaking afterwards, Ms Walker said the A149 had been discussed at "virtually every meeting" of the committee but the topic had been "pushed to the side".
"I think the fact that it was the Duke of Edinburgh involved yesterday, it has brought this right to the forefront, and I think we will now see some speedy work done," she said.
"I wouldn't say it was an accident waiting to happen, but it is something we have highlighted previously.
"Unfortunately it was who it was, and I hate to say this, but if it hadn't have been him would we be discussing this today?"

Safety measures to be implemented

Driver who tried to destroy a 9-foot snowman rams car into the stump at the snowman's base
Would-be vandals trying to destroy a snowman in front of a Kentucky home get a nasty surprise when they hit the tree stump that made up the snowman's base.
