Unbelievable stupidity

Yes, but whose stupidity? Says there is a work zone on the track nearby. I bet that means the track is speed restricted. Did they change the signal barriers for the new lower track speed limit?

I don't know about there, but here many crossing circuits sense the speed of the train and activate the gates 30 seconds before it arrives.

I have to say, I know better, but if the gates were down for that long and no train came, I would probably LOOK CAREFULLY IN BOTH DIRECTIONS and then go across myself. And that's what these people seemed to be doing.

If the gates are functioning as designed but atypically due to track work, the railroad should have someone there to raise them when no train actually coming.

Coming home Saturday night, I was going about 40 in a 35 zone and this little car was so close behind me I couldn't see its headlights in my mirror, just the glow from them. I swear, if I'd had my trailer hitch installed, the tiny red hamstermobile would have been sucking it like a lollipop. When the road expanded to four lanes, I saw it was red and had the Illinois plate IM DAMD 2. He should be.

Having been driven in several places in China I can honestly say I've never seen such bad driving anywhere else. If find find that they are heading the wrong way they just do a "U" turn, bikes/trikes/scooters just go where and when they want to, one way streets are "one way" - the way they are going, likewise for the "correct" side of the road. They are generally not very fast, but they never allow more than a few inches between them and the car in front, or if they do, they don't react to traffic slowing down, they PANIC at the last moment. And as for phones, only two at a time????
I saw at least one accident on each journey of about 20 minutes, more on the airport runs of an hour.....

Police have released security camera footage of a BMW that fell seven stories off of a parking garage in downtown Austin, Tex., in July.

The driver suffered serious injuries in the incident, but she did survive.

Apparently, the driver mistook the gas pedal for the brake, and drove through the retention wires of the open walled building.

After slamming into the ground, the car hit a passing SUV, but inflicted only minor damage and did not injure its driver.

Last September, another car drove through the retention wires of the same garage and was left dangling nine stories in the air, but didn’t fall. Its occupant managed to get out and back to safety with the help of another driver who was on the parking deck when it happened.

The garage is currently closed as a structural engineer assesses the situation.

Keep calm. The most important thing is to keep calm, and remember your instructor is there to help if you have a problem.

To me it looks like the instructor is more anxious than the learner.

Bad idea

Sorry, not only correct but should be mandatory. However perhaps there should be a minimum number of hours time before the instructor permits the "roadway."
Correct because if you never have used a "roadway," and now can without an instructor, disaster soon ensues. It is called the school of hard knocks, and this would be literal.
A good instructor would also put them in the worst rush hour traffic jam he can find and have them show they can handle it.
Before you give that license you want them to have been exposed and have practice in everything they are now licensed to do.

Student pilots can learn 98% of what they need to know to fly in a five mile radius of the airport. That last 2% is how to fly from airport A to airport B and what a different runway looks like. Before they can take the test, they must complete a solo journey to an airport at least 50 miles away and come back.

I'm assuming a "roadway" is a controlled access road that does not have intersections, "freeway" to us on this side of the pond.

Split the license into 2 parts 1&2 with 2 being the full license to drive anywhere on any road.

Just think of all that lovely dosh the government can rake in. They've done it for HGV, so why can't car drivers have the same treatment with the added benefit in that they'll know how to proceed on motorways :-)

Interesting. In America we have a much lower rate of accidents on the freeways than on the local roads. Is it the opposite over there?

Or do your "motorways" include what we call "highways" which are high speed roads with intersections? Worst accident rates on them.

The issue in freeways is learning how to get on them and get off them. Between A and B there isn't any difference than a local road and you don't have to watch out for kids suddenly darting out between parked cars.

As to graduated licenses, here if you are a youngster you can't have passengers unless one of them is over 25 and has a valid license.

Maybe a better thing would be a mandatory app in the smart phone that shuts it off over 15 MPH.

There is a problem with your idea, as some "A" roads are almost the same as Motorways, but aren't because there would be no "A" road going in the same direction.
An example is, the A56 from its junction with the M65 junction 8 until it changes to the M56 near Edenfield. Except for the roundabout at Rising Bridge all junctions are motorway style slip roads.

Was just being "general" Nick. Agree with what you say. My local A road is as you say. Between here & Brampton, it is the A1(M) & again closer to London. However, "IF" one has passed the test & that 2 part license came into effect, "ONE" should know the highway code & being able to read road signs :-)

When I learned to drive, we had a tollway day. There were always three of us in the car, plus the teacher. In the 56 minute class period, we had just enough time to drive from school to the entrance ramp, pay the toll (10c then), merge into traffic, pull off on the shoulder, change drivers, merge back into traffic, pull off at the next exit (no toll at this one), get back on going the other way, pull over and change drivers again, continue back to where we first got on (another 10c), and get back to school.
