Just started watching on PBS NOVA: "Why Trains Crash"

New, 2/22/2017, Science & Technology, Documentary

Investigators examine the wreckage of famous train accidents and safety experts put their latest crash-prevention designs through trial, all to ensure that trains, which are essential for moving both freight and people, avoid collisions.

Often upon secret information that the public are not allowed to be privy to.
And how are you aware of that fact?

I'm kind to animals and I look after my granny.
Good for you :-)

Fiddling the books.
Money talks, safety walks.

Total utter Bollox. Nowhere in the UK is it safe for the public to drive on roads at almost 100mph, for any reason whatsoever, especially just a bypass.
Your constant reliance on profanities says much of your teaching skills.

Probably both in Lodge.
One of the reasons why there will never be roads safe enough.

People might be legaly driving / riding after getting 12 points on their licences but bet their insurance premiums are mega "loaded" probably to the same extent as a person who has just passed their test . £ 3000+ per year TPFT or even 3rd party let alone fully comp .
If you don't declare you have points it don't take much for insurance companys / police etc to find out and then the "shi#e hits the fan " especialy if you're involved in a accident .

When i got " pulled" over riding my motorbike the police man knew my name , convictions , insurance , mot details before they had even got out of their car !!
Life is what you make of it :-)

When i'm good i'm very good , but when i'm bad i'm shi#eloads better ;-) In't I " buttercups " p.m.s.l at authoritie !!;-)

Message 1850813 - Posted: 23 Feb 2017, 17:32:45 UTC

I had two friends who were magistrates (both now have shuffled off this mortal coil). Both had very "hard" attitudes to drivers won more than 12 points. They both had some very heated "discussions" with other magistrates when drivers got to twelve point, they both said that the biggest objectors weren't the funny handshake mob, but some of the "grey rinse" brigade. These people saw it their "duty" to allow the mum rushing to school at 70mph in the 30 mph limit with little Johnny kneeling on the front passenger seat, while still "getting over" the dozen large Vodka breakfast to keep her license as loosing it would impact on her family life. For those not familiar with the UK driving points system, you win three of them for having a child not properly secured, between 3 and 9 for the speeding, and an instant 12 for the driving over the limit, that's a minimum of 21 points, which equates to a ban. I can't remember what it would be, but at least a year, and an "extended re-test" to get back on the road.

Which is why I like the fact that Car & HGV licenses are no longer separate but on the one license document (photocard now that paper docs is no longer in use).

If you drive while drunk or under drugs and kill someone in Italy you are charged with "road homicide" under a new law and get a maximum of ten years in jail. Such punishment is rarely given, however, they always find some excuses for diminishing it, but it is a law.

In the UK a conviction for a drink drive offence is an automatic 12 month ban, full stop finish.

Should be a lifetime ban with NO chance of getting your licence back !!!

Now that is the usual comments you were liked for in the past, so even though you still slipped in a comment slightly ott, a deserved +1.

As for your final sentence (pun intended) a well deserved +100.

@Mark - you really can't make a hard and fast rule for every case. Which is why pre court probation reports are asked for.

Case A, Person stopped at 9am, breathalysed, just over the limit after a family wedding reception the night before. Clean record, no previous convictions.

Case B, person stopped at 12 midday, breathalysed, well over the limit, previous points on licence.

Drink Driving Is Drink Driving whatever the circumstances are , the limit should be 0 not what it is now same goes for drug Driving .

If you're driving you should'nt f-ing drink alchoholic drinks end off , there's NO excuse for it !! even if it's the day after the night before people should take responsibility for their actions .

And i DON'T give a crap if that upsets people one little bit !!!

It takes 48 hours for alcohol to clear one's system. Too many think it flushes through them like a toilet cistern.

Rhinovirus driving should also be a lifetime ban. Just like texting driving!

Over here it is mandatory jail time. http://dui.drivinglaws.org/california.php#

The clearance time was brought home to girl where I used to work.
One day in the middle of the week she didn't turn up for work. When nothing was heard one of her colleagues They phoned her parents to see if she was OK. They knew nothing, but did say she'd been out with some friends the night before. Later on, and still noting heard her parents phoned the police "Yes, she's here, in a cell and the doctor is with her. Can you come down, we need to speak to you face to face." Parents go to the police and are greeted in a very cold manner,, and the situation was explained to them. She wouldn't be going home until she "blew below the limit", and that wasn't going to be anytime soon as she was still over three times above the limit. Eventually she was let out the next day, about 36 hours after her last drink. Twenty four month ban, compulsory drink/drive awareness course, huge fine, extended re-test, disciplinary action from work. Not to mention the massive increase in insurance, and loss of mobility, and loss of "street cred" with her peers.

Driving with the influence of alcohol is very bad.
Especially in the muslim countries.
My GF worked in Oman for a while and one of her coworker did that and killed a young boy.
He was sentenced to serve his time in a pithole!
After six months he was released but he was mentally ill after that.

Hairdryers used to strike blow against speeders in Hopeman

Villagers dressed in fluorescent jackets are pointing hairdryers at cars to mimic police using speed cameras in a bid to deter fast drivers in Moray.
Residents of Hopeman fear someone could be seriously injured or killed by speeding drivers.
It follows concern about cars reaching speeds of up to 60mph as they travel through the area. There is a long straight leading out of the village.
Residents including children have now resorted to the hairdryers.

Aware of complaints'
Police Scotland said in a statement: "Road safety is a priority for Police Scotland, particularly for North East division.
"We are aware of complaints regarding speeding in Hopeman, which we are continuing to address.
"This aligns with one of our divisional priorities and supports Operation Cedar, which concentrates on reducing the number of serious and fatal road traffic incidents within the North East area."
Moray Council said it was a matter for Police Scotland.

Germany is 0.05% along with what is probably the largest group of countries. There are some countries with 0% (most are Muslim, but not all, and several that are as good as 0%; 0.01%).
Here in Australia it is 0.05%, however for learners, P platers etc it's 0% and for & professional drivers (trucks, buses, Taxis etc) it's 0% in most states (or close enough to it, below 0.02%).
Interestingly (scarily) some countries have no limit.

BAC limits by country.
