But then you have to buy a saw table to cut it into 4 pieces (3 cuts).

Here it's called a "2 by 4".

What would you expect in America Vic, you can't even drive on the proper side of the road :-)) It is traditional to designate timber by its maximum dimension first.

And in any case it depends whether it is rough sawn (100mm x 47mm) or planed, (95mm x 44mm)

I'm sure there was a 4 x 2 pop group, but all I can find is Unit 4 + 2.

Rough cut, careful there, risk of splinters there, I had a house made with those once, today a true 2"x4" piece of lumber is somewhat smaller, still point taken and a motorcycle rider(w/o a sidecar) can ride on any countries roads, as motorcycles are road neutral.

Unplanned true dimension it would be a an 8o x 16o. or 8 -quarter by 16 quarter. We identify true dimension unplanned timber by quarters of an inch, an "o". But always the smaller dimension first.
Vic, the term true dimension means true dimension it is actually 2 inches by 4 inches. Your talking a common 2x4 which is finished to 1.5 inches x 3.5 inches.

Yeah, today they're all planed down to 1.5"x3.5", unplaned they were really 2"x4" at one time, My Mom and I owned an old house where all the lumber was unplaned, rough cut that is and I measured one, it was 2"x4"(I was up in the attic, it was pretty warm there), the garage has 2"x3" lumber as the studs, cut the same way there too, heck I reroofed the garage in the mid 80's and from a 2015 Google street pic, the roof for the stand alone 2 car garage has not had any work, I guess I did a good job back then.

Rough cut, careful there, risk of splinters there

All timber framed houses have the main carcasses constructed of rough sawn timber, with timber stud internal partitions. They are then covered with exterior weatherproof cladding, and plaster board (dry walling) internally. The Roof trusses and floor joists will be from structural timber of various strength grades. The only planed timber will be the doors, architraves, bannisters etc which come into human contact in normal daily use. You are more likely to get a splinter from a garden fence!

All construction is done with 2x4s (unless engineering requires something larger, such as a 2x6, 2x8, 2x10, or 2x12, all of which are actually a bit smaller than their names imply). Even steel and aluminum studs are made 1.5x3.5 to match wooden ones.

and a motorcycle rider(w/o a sidecar) can ride on any countries roads, as motorcycles are road neutral.

As far as I know there is no restriction that says that a vehicle designed for driving on the left, cannot be driven in countries where they drive on the right, and vice versa. Just that extra care needs to be taken. Motor cycles with or without sidecars are classed the same as any other vehicle. If you drive on the "wrong" side of the road, then you risk killing yourself or others, and at the very least being summonsed and banned.

Last I heard, Oz did not allow left-drive vehicles. I think Japan doesn't either. I know of no restrictions on right-drive vehicles in the US.

Hi TL, I shall consider myself bugged :-)

The western portion of Alta California was organized as the State of California, which was admitted as the 31st state on September 9, 1850.

Did a quick Web Search and the first link that popped up showed CA as 49th; but, Chris is right in his recent edit of his post... CA is the 31st State in the Union. Alaska is the 49th State in the Union.

Can't trust the Web!!! :-O

Last I heard, Oz did not allow left-drive vehicles.

That's not strictly true David, but it is very hard for someone with a left-drive vehicle to get road certification.

Car collectors, foreign Embassy vehicles and some self drive holidayers (depending on the vehicle/s involved) are allowed on our roads, but they must carry signage on them warning other road users of the fact.

Cheers.
