From what I read they are only cancelling the permit to build another telescope. It would have been the largest on the volcano. So far the other telescopes will remain in operation. The reason for the cancellation of the permit is the opposition of native Hawaiians to construction on the volcano as they regard it as a holy site to their pagan religion. God help us all! In this current politically correct society we live in and especially regarding the religious practices of the various native populations the protection of Holy sites tends to take precedence over other factors in the courts. Another case in point was the discovery of the remains of what might be one of the earliest humans to step foot in the Americas. The local native tribe sought and obtained a court order to return the bones to their custody before any scientific analysis was completed. In all likelihood the bones probably belonged to someone that far predated the history of the current tribe.
